Hi all this is for a friend of mine. She has a 300tdi and the gear stick when in neutral centred between 3rd and 4th gears but it has now started to centre between 1st and 2nd gears. Is this just a case of adjusting something. At the moment she won't drive it as she thinks its going to blow up or something like that...Thanks...Tony

My wife's TDi 300 was the same. It's an easy and cheap fix.

At the base of the gear lever is a plate and two springs which spring-load the gear lever, the plate or one of the springs has broken and all should be replaced - total cost from an LR dealer £7 !!!

To do the job you need to take out the centre console (about 30 mins)to get at the top of the gearbox. Once there the fix will be in place within 10 mins then put it all back together.

If the car is driven in it's current state it is unlikely to harm anything.

I had this problem on my 200 tdi like the big lad said its the bias plate at the bottom of the gear stick only mine had not broken it had moved a little bit i undone the four bolts that hold it in posistion moved it back to the correct posistion and problem solved.
