Hi all.New to the forum.I have a 00 freelander{manual} and occasionally it wont go into 1st and 2nd.Is there anything other than the gear selector that it be{hoping a simple bush etc}.Thanks in advance, tony mac.

What model Freelander? There are differences in the hydraulics...

Try bleeding the clutch if you find it needs to be pushed hard down to engage first gear sometimes. :)

Its the xedi station wagon 2.0 t diesel. The problem comes and goes.I see there are 2 rods conecting the gear selector to the gearbox.Do these give bother often?cheers, tony

One rod drives the gear selection, the other references the gear stick to the gearbox, otherwise when the transmission moves on its mounts it could deselect the current gear. I suspect the clutch as mine does something similar. Does selecting reverse gear cause a 'crunch' as well?

Hasn't the L series diesel got the external slave cylinder with bracket that bends?

Hi Gents.Yes it crunches into reverse unless i let engine settle to tickover. Then it goes into reverse fine. The gear selector refuses to travel {in neutral}over to the left,so as to go either, foward for 1st or back for second. In neutral when pushed left it only lines up with 3rd and 4th.There is no problem selecting 3,4,5 and reverse. This is what makes me think it is a rod that selects sideways motion,or something similar.Hope this helps.Tia,tony.

I understand what your saying now. Have you checked for wear and free play in the joint where the linkage attaches to the gearbox and also that the roll pin and clip that secures it is still tight. A bit of free movement there could make a big difference at the lever.
