gear selector light

hi all, was out cleaning the rangie the other day and when i was cleaning the interior i knocked the sport mode button and this turned the light off the gear selector?!! i had the key out of the ignition and know that the selector light will glow slightly as an indication that the becm is self testing but was wondering if that when pressing the gear mode button it turns it off, or the interior sensor is turned off??? Any ideas????
