its happened the last two times ive taken the landy out, when i reverse out of the drive, and then push the clutch in to change into first it wont go into gear. I push the clutch pedal in and out for 20 secs and it'll eventually it'll go into first and off we go .It will then be fine untill the next day, when it does the same again, any clues. Oh and its a v8 with a lt95:confused:

It'll go straight into reverse, but then wont go in any gear once ive backed out of the drive, but as soon as it does its ok all the rest of the time. feels like clutch

all the other gears use baulk rings which will not functyion properly as oil thickens does it improve when gear box warms up,reverse gear is a sliding idler so not affected by oil

Well worth bleeding the clutch. Couple of weeks ago I had real problems shifting. Was planning to replace clutch cylinders but thought it was worth bleeding the clutch as lost no fluid from reservoir.
I used an easy bleed, which made bleeding, er easy. Cap on master cylinder was quite loose. I suspect moisture had been getting in over time. Grey silty, watery fluid came out. Nice new Dot 4 in. Hey presto fixed and shifting better than ever!

if it was clutch you should hear rev idler grating as you try to engage it check gear box has 15/40 engine oil rather than ep90 gear oil as that would make it harder in the cold

Thanks fellas, im gonna bleed the clutch on monday. Its a bit strange actually, as if i just drive forward it gives me no trouble at all. Its only if the first gear i have to use is reverse. But once it goes into gear its fine for the just of the time. There is no whining or grating or nothing. I think you are all right that it may just be the clutch needs bleeding but why does it work all the time after the initial non starter
anyways Happy xmas all xxx

my series 3 used to do this but with mine it was the first gear selector worn down and needed replacing i used to just lift the clutch slightly while selecting first then boot the clutch back down and it would just slip in fine :D:D

mine sometimes refuses to go into first, and on the odd occasion reverse. I usually just slip it into a different gear (for example 3rd) then keeping the clutch down just pop it into first, works every time :S

thing is someone has put standard engine oil in the gearbox. im about to replace it as I am sure its not good.

so what is the best oil for the gearbox, and while I am there the diffs and Engine as well?
