Hi all, I have just bought a 1994 disco 300tdi manual and am having trouble selecting gears. The gearbox seems good in every other way, changes down to 2nd without crunching but the stick dose not centre and I have no clue which gear I’m selecting including going into reverse in stead of first which isn’t fun!

I have done a search but I don’t really know what to search for so couldn’t find any posts with this same problem

Can anyone could point me in the right direction please.

Cheers
Ian

presuming it's an R380, it has a selector mechanism, "bias", which transmits the movement from the lever to gears... it has a plastic bit at the bottom which used to crack( named yoke, pivot bush, etc according to the type of gearbox) ... u can check this mechanism by removing the centre console and open it.... the problem might be in there

Sounds like the bias spring has gone that centers the gear stick between 3rd and 4th.

Mine has also gone, its is now biased between 1 and 2 lol. You get used to it. Or fix it, its only one or 2 screws i think

Hi

I did mine some time back for the same reason, it was the plate that holds the bias spring which was broken, this is a common problem and cheap to fix.
It is an easy job to fix but a pain to get to, you have to remove the center consul and both gear gaitors, then drill out about 12 large rivets to get to the selector mechanism the rivets closest to the engine are a bit of a pain to get to.
