LR Disco 1 1998, R380 type gear box.

Have looked at most of the previous posts concerning the wonderful bias plate as mine is holding the gear lever in the 1st - 2nd plane which makes quick changes to third & fourth a bit of a nightmare. It was fine and was replaced by my local LR indie about 2 years ago.

Have taken all apart (after some trepidation) and revealed the bias plate & the two springs. On my plate the two springs are a totally different guage of wire. The one that pushes the lever to the right is half the gauge of the one that pushes the lever to the left. Thus the lever is being held to the left.

I note that in some posts ther has been reference to the ability to adjust the springs. How?

Should the springs be different gauges of wire?

Sorry there are no pictures, it's raining (again) and I can't remember how to reduce the pictures so I can post them. Last time I tried it all ended in tears!!

Any help gratefully received.

an r380 should have equal springs lt77 uses 2 different sized one ,plates adjusted by slackening the 4 bolts and levering the plate across ,the vertical tab can be tapped using screw driver and hammer for fine adjustment if needed

Thank you for the information, I shall be having words with the garage that fitted the current one and shall be purchasing the correct one tomorrow. It just goes to show that if you want a job doing correctly, then DIY is the only way. Whilst I have the centre console off I may have a bash at adjusting the transmission brake. It amazes me though that the gear lever stayed in the correct plane for so long. One good thing about the exercise is I now have a shiny new pop rivet gun to play with.

check where springs rub on lower gear stick if its grooved pull stick out once bias plates removed and weld up and grind smooth

Thanks again for the very helpful advice. Whilst I can wield a spanner & socket set and can even cope with electrics, I am a complete novice when it comes to the black arts of welding. I did learn to braze when I was at school, but that was so long ago, the dinosaurs were still roaming the earth. Will have a look later today. Thanks again.
