i just bougt a 1992 discovery drivingit home i found it difficolt to select the gears, when in nutral the gear stick is on the left by 1st and 2nd is this normal as when changing from 5 to 4 i have to guess wher the gear is, i am finding it easier but wondered if there is a problem wth gearbox. hope for reply

Not so much a gearbox problem but a snapped bias plate, take your center console out and then take off the top housing where the stick go's into. There should be a spring each side of the stick and upright plate that the springs rest against and keep the stick in the neutral position

That's exactly the problem I had with the R380 box in my TD5 Disco. The plate was about a fiver off ebay. You'll likely have to take the centre console out to get at the part but it's an easy enough job. Ashcroft Transmissions have some useful info on this on their FAQ pages.

One tip to keep in mind is that when removing your centre console try not to fully disengage the handbrake ratchet. I did this and buggered up the handbrake button spring and had to get a new handbrake.

Cheers

Andy
