thinking about buying a 1997 p38 2.5dt but it has a problem with the engine management light coming on in between gear changes there is no acceleration until it has gone off, soon as the car is warm then it runs lovely, any ideas what this could be as the car is to good to break and would like to put it back on the road

Timing the FIP is not for the faint hearted apparently...

Need the use of locking pins, a Dial Indicator to measure the lift on the cam(?) and the adjustment needs to be measured in thousands of an inch....

A search will pull up some posts on the subject, also the timing process is in RAVE.-
Diagnostics will no doubt indicate if the FIP modulation timing and if it is indeed out of time...

Idle on the auto should be 750 +/- 50rpm.....If it keeps stalling it could be the FIP timing and stop solenoid or Quantity Servo or whatever it is called could be misadjusted too....

Wammers or Datatek are the Diesel gurus!

Come on, you should know the :rulez:
Never buy a P38 with a fault unless you know exactly what it is and how much it's going to cost.

Mind you at £750 I might be tempted to take a punt :behindsofa:

Could be a lot of things, needle lift sensor or the FIP. Needs to go on diagnostics to be sure. Unlikely IMO to be FIP timing but it could be the temperature sensor for the EDC if it runs well when warmed up. Is it manual or auto?
