Hi all got myself a Discovery at last its a 1998 300tdi auto safari.
Right when driving around in it i noticed that the center console and auto gear stick seem to get quite hot is this ok or should they not get hot?
I was going to change the atf fluid in the box because it looks a bit brown and doesn't smell correct but I have also been told not to change the oil.
Anyone got any ideas?
And is it a bad idea to change the oil in the diffs?

Thanks it helped a little but its still a worry with the console getting hot.

Hi, mines a 200 tdi and there is a small amount of heat comes up through the tunnel and the gearlever gets slightly warm think this is normal as mine is running correct quantity and grade of oil. If its getting excessively hot I would consider checking gearbox and transfer box oil levels and the grade and type of oil in the two. I have seen in the past someone filling the main box up with EP90 when it's meant to run Automatic transmission fluid which is slighty perverse for a manual box but the upshot is that ep90 wouldn't circulate properly and the box would be staved of oil in places and thus these bits would get hot and eventually f@@k up.

Thanks for all the replies.
Just a thought then if the heat is as it should be then maybe wrapping the underside of the tunnel in heat shield mat could help? what you guys think?
Also as I'm new to Land Rovers how many questions about things on mine do you think I could ask before people start getting peed off with me ( as theres a few things I'm not to sure on ) ? lol

I know it sounds silly but the heaters are tunneled though the center console to the rear. Was your heater on full heat because my center gets toastie when it is.

I did think of that so I put the air con on to see if any change and there wasn't much.
Also the gears seem to be longer on this than any other auto I've had I have looked in the book but cant find anything about the gear change speeds etc

Just a thought sorry can't help any further as I dont know anything bout auto's. Oh and :welcome2:to LZ

Check your handbrake drum isn't dragging. If it's adjusted too tight or full of oil it will get hot. If it gets very hot it could blow your transfer box seal and dump the oil on the road (and seize up). It's the most likely cause.

have you got sport mode on? my d2 V8 changes very quickly if I'm gentle on the throttle (I can get upto 4th by 35mph or still be in 2nd at 50) they are sensitive to throttle position. The gear change is more to do with throttle position than speed I think
the torque converter locks at 50mph ish so you then get a direct drive .
I wouldn't worry about asking questions they don't bite . If you dont want to ask it is worth doing a search because you can guarantee someone will have had the same question/problem

i have a 300tdi auto and my centre console doesnt get hot at all, doesnt matter what kind of driving im doing or if the heaters are on or off there is no heat at all. i would also rule out the exhaust unless the zorst pipe is glowing red hot, it runs close to the centre console but nowhere near close enough to transfer that kind of heat up the gear lever. an easy check for you to do is go for a drive untill you feel the centre console get hot, then head home and wait 5 mins, then get underneath and have a feel of the auto box. STAY AWAY from the zorst pipe tho, it WILL remove skin an i got the scars to prove it:mad: if the gearbox feels hot all round then its more than likely a problem in the box itsself, if the box is hotter at the bottom then i'd check what fluid is in there.

changing the oils in the diff and axles is a very good idea, book says every 2 years but no harm in doin it annually.

yes the box does take a while to change, but it changes depending on how you drive it - floor the throttle and it'll change at about 4k rpm, gentle throttle and it'll change at 2k rpm.
