gear box help

hi all my 300 tdi gear box has lost all drive i can selact the gears but when letting out the clutch all i get is a grinding and knocking noise the RAC got me of the side of dinas mawddwy in north wales . what i need to know is it worth having a go at doing it my self , or do an exchange box or have mine re built funds are low so i need the most cost efective way to repaire please help thanks roger

Hi,Roger 1966. Did the RAC geezer say it was the gear box or clutch?or not sure . If gear box see related info on here .Same for clutch. Otherwise check out ask a mechanic .Try engine section have'nt looked lately but worth a look.

hi and thanks he thinks a shaft has stripped in the main box the clutch is still working just no drive thanks again will have a look

Have you tried enagaging difflock?? Just in case it's a broken halfshaft?? Other option is broken springs on the clutch and a knackered release bearing.

Hi,and ouch if it is the shaft,but you should be able to sort it out one way or another, or as you say, recon box but hunt around for best prices.Hope you find what you are looking for . Good point red hand.

hi yes put it in diff lock still the same loads of noise and no drive do you think a recon main box or have a go my self at changing the shaft regards

probably be easier to get another box.

ok thanks seen one at £300 exchange will i need the gear that links the transfer box aswell cheers roger

if ya transfer box is ok then it'll swap straight onto the new box.

cross drilled input gear if not there already

hi all just sent my gear box to be fixed the guy says theres nothing wrong with it so i have removed the clutch plate can some one just conferm that the center spline should not spin on the inside of the plate bit confused now please help.....

centre spline should not spin on the clutch driven plate

get a new clutch, friction plate splines should be smooth sliding fit-if it's sloppy as hell the input shaft will be knackered

In a way glad to hear its not the gearbox, hope the clutch is not to bad .

hi just to let the guys that gave me the info sent my box in to be done it was fine just 40 quids worth of work the center of th clutch had broken out thanks to you all by the way found a great transmition guy whitehouse and son at half penny gree air port in the midlands loads of info and not ripped off .
