Hi again,
Just remembered,. Can anyone tell me the correct way to Bleed the Cooling system once I"ve put it all back together.

Bleed screw on the heater hose close to the bulkhead with the heater knob turned to full on. I filled mine until it started coming out the bleed screw squeezing the hoses a few times, then closed the screw and started the car and let it warm up topping up the header tank as it dropped. It took around 20 - 30 minutes start to finish opening the bleed screw every few minutes with the engine running.
I couldn't swear this is the correct procedure but it worked for me.

Brilliant, I"ll try that tomorrow, In the meantime I have now got the thermostat in the hose which I took off the car to make it easier to do. Is there anyway I can check the thermostat is working properly before I put it all back on the car.
Please, any advice.

I assume it is not possible for the stat to flip to one side and therefore not be able to do it's job?

No, it"s seems to be sitting alright inside the hose, a really tight fit. Everything looks ok, I just want to make sure I have not been sold a duff Thermostat.

"I"ve only gone and bloody done it", as DelBoy said, mind you he was talking about a completely different thing.
After hours and hours of putting the hose in boiling hot water, stretching it wider using different width lengths of round wood, until it was what looked like the size suitable to squeeze in the thermostat, then using Plumbers grease and sheer brute force, would it go in, would it hell and then my Wife came along and suggested using Fairy Liquid. "Don"t be stupid" I said, "That"ll never work, I"ve got the proper stuff, Plumbers grease" but would she give up? No, "Try it" she said and just to show her what a stupid idea it was I tried it. It went in easy as anything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That was yesterday, today I took the Freelander for a drive and within 3 miles or so the temperature guage was at half point. Not since I bought the car has the temperature guage been anywhere near half way and fingers crossed, no leaks, and to prove it I"m downloading a photo taken this morning.
Can I take this opportunity to THANK everyone who gave advice and help. Thanks All. What a great site this is.

LOL, Wimmen!
Hope you didn't tell her she's so much smarter than the combined brains of Landyzone.

Lol.
I tried wash up liquid without success. I then used good old plumbers grease. I've used it for years on KV6 thermostats with great success. Maybe I should have been using Fairy Liquid instead.:D

I"m really glad I went through the aggro of fitting the thermostat because this morning it does feel a little parky and the old heater might be needed very soon.
Now my next job is the drivers door which locks but doesn"t unlock when using the Key fob, it"s a real pain because to open the door I have to open the rear off side door and then lean in to open the drivers door. Any help or advice from the combined brilliance of the Landyzone crew would be appreciated.

I would start another thread for this, as it may get lost in the Gates TH01489 posts here, I did notice that my drivers door played up yesterday also, I could not open it only with the key, therefore I suspect solenoid in the lock, also the rear would not open either, once I opened the driver door with the key the rear worked quite peculiar.

Glad the stat is working as it should. Keep an eye on the coolant level over the next few weeks. It will take some time for all the air to be bled from the system.

I would guess that the door not unlocking on the remote is most likely to be the motor itself. It's a common failure on the FL1 and Rover 75 which share the same parts.
If the door still doesn't unlock when using the key then further investigation will be needed.

Thanks for that Nodge68. Yeah it opens fine with the key but just wont open with Key Fob. Is it an easy job to change the motor or solenoid?
and yes Artic 2, I probably will open another thread.
Thanks all.

It's an awkward job but not hard. You should be able to get a 2nd hand replacement from a scrappy but it might be worth spraying release oil into the mechanism first.

That is just so frustrating.... why are they always right!!!! Its just so f***king annoying. I feel for you brother, I hope one of your mates was available to get out of the house and go down the pub with :)

Quality result on the car :)

The sensing bulb would go downwards in the picture above. So bulb towards the engine. The sensing bulb actually enters the plastic T piece on the TD4 auto. ;)

I don't think I have that T piece on my 06 TD4.

Stat should arrive tomorrow or Thursday.

Panic over then!
I was beginning to think the previous owner had modified the coolant system for some reason and that was why I only get warm air after around 16 miles or so.

Touch wood, thermostat seems to be working perfectly reaching the correct temperature within 3 miles. Tried the Heater and that"s like toast but I do check the water level every day and this morning I did have to top it up a little. Also checking the MPG and will let you know when I next fill up what the results will be.
Cheers all.

The coolant level will drop for a bit as all the air purges out the system. Otherwise all should be well;)
