Galv chassis - painting questions

Hi all,

New richards chassis, which I am painting (slowly)

I have done the mordant solution bit and now I have painted with hammerite special metals primer. Question is - I have some red oxide primer in garage, should I now paint it with that before finishing it with chassis black, or is that overkill and should I go straight to chassis black now?

Probably overkill but it won't do any harm, it's good to know you have plenty of coverage

No, you don't need to. I did as I think they look better when painted, and a bit less of a magnet for thieves.

gotcha. enjoy your build. got mine a couple of weeks ago but done nothing with it

As you have put the mordant solution on it you have stripped the galvanised finish off the out side of the chassis. So the specialist Metal primer may not stay on sounds strange but give it a scratch with your nail and if it stays on its ok if it comes off you will need to jet wash it off and put Red oxide on it. I say all this as I have seen this before working for a large paint manufacturer.

Ideally you need to use acid etch primer when you twashed it
think i used around 7-8 tins of the upol8 stuff bloody good
then just paint it with chassis paint
you can never have to many coats
