Funny rattly noise

I think i may have narrowed down an annoying tingly rattly noise from the
back end of my 93 disco. When you go over normal roads bumps, potholes,
kerbs etc there is a tinny noise from the back end, if then do the same with
the brakes lightly applied the noise has gone. Could it be 'loose' brake
pads, anti rattle shims missing, is a common thing, any better ideas.

Our Rangie does it serviced by me, and our Disco does it serviced by Land
Rover so I shouldn't worry too much, Ours seems to be more front end and is
more noticable when first fitted. Once they get gunked up then they tend to
chatter less.

I had a similar thing with my 90 and it turned out to be loose/buggered
brackets on the exhaust pipe heat shield allowing it to rattle against the
exhaust pipe but it only happened at certain revs so I at first thought it a
serious engine problem. Perhaps yours is a rear bracket. Now got some new
stainless brackets made by a friend.

Now to chase the next rattle that comes from behind the dash but on the
left.

Don't ignore the anti-rattle springs i.e. the ones between the outside
of the pad and the pad retaining pins. They have another function which
is to prevent the pad rotating in the calliper. If they go missing the
pad can rotate and allow an edge to machine the disc off!

>Sounds like the retaining pins are moving in the calliper, probably worn
>ovals in the calliper housing, allowing the pads to rattle around.

Two choices, either buy new callipers or live with it.

Are you sure it is brakes?
I had a similar noise with a 92 TDiS. It had the progressively wound springs
at the rear, and the closer coils chattered together going over bumps. Some
heater hose split and put over the coils at the closer end sorted the noise
out.
