hi all,Just bought a 1999 t reg 1.8 3 dr black frelander.
Looks great drives fantastic. THEN IT GETS WORSE.

I get home to show the wife my pride and joy she says to me"What a lovely looking car immaculate paint work, unmarked interior, but do all landrovers wet themselves" i said what do you mean she says "look under the front of the car".Anyway i look and see water pouring out from underneath so i immediately pull the bonnet catch which takes me five minutes to pull(which incidentally was longer than it took me to pull my wife lol)so with bonnet up i check top up bottle no water then look from top of engine no water marks or wet no water in oil.so then decided to look from underneath and thats as far as i got as it was getting to dark.I can only think it could be a split hose hopefully any ideas?and not anything too dear thanking you in anticipation

thats what i first hoped but i didnt think the air con drained all water from header tank and more about 1 and half litres probably in total and if you could send me some matches and if not how much does this model this year normally cost to buy thankyou

Light a match by it see if its the self ignitor

will radweld do the job on the radiator? hose no problem i can sort that.Private sale but got it very cheap i think but maybe more hassle than its worth.which is how much guys?

Do not, under any circumstances, use radweld in a K series injun unless you want to buy a noo injun. There are small waterways on those lumps. As it is you only need to sneeze on those lumps to get HGF:(.

Yu cannot run a freelander on the cheap. If yu cant afford to look after it properly, sell it and get a disco.

Sorry i've got to disagree....

In 2005 the remote level sensor was introduced (PCF500060) black plastic unit with a float inside which fits just downstream of the expansion tank.

The remote thermostat was fitted from 2001, and was a retrofit option on any earlier K1.8 car that needed it. I think the confusion is that there was an improvement made to the remote thermostat in 2005 at the same time as the level sensor was introduced. The change was to the wax setting, it opens slightly earlier. Early one from 2001 was cream plastic, later one from 2005 is grey plastic.

:)

Is that the remote stat, not the Pressure Release Thermostat, there are more than two variants of the PRT, three IIRC plus the standard remote stat

I have posted pics of this in MG-Rover.org gallery several years back, viewed by thousands.

I cant remember off hand, have the details somewhere, but one of the PRT's is from a diesel and has 82oC operating temperature as opposed to 88oC.

Plus one of them has a stronger spring

I'd also add that the PRT are extortion, about £50 and there is no guarantee it will stop hgf. Any k-series driver should put that £50 to better usage.

There is a guy Technozen, who has a how to on a DIY sensor, costs pounds, with variable time delay to prevent false alarms when low levels during cornering.

Better than the OE item.

As for me.... my drilled stat ring is working fine, it was good enough for A-series engine.

The remote stat on K1.8 is a PRT. The early one (cream colour, PEM100990) was common to Disco V8 and had a stronger bypass spring than the later one (grey). The later one (PEL500110) also opens at a sligtly lower temp than the previous.

I wouldn't fancy either's chances at stopping a HGF as you say. I bought a TD4 for that reason.

There is a 'remote' stat, not a PRT, this is a standard thermostat in a housing assembly on the outlet hose. It has a small bypass and no pressure release.

Ok cheers for the part numbers, I have them buried somewhere,

i will have to go digging for the info on this, IIRC there is only one PRT suitable for the 1.8

Edit - PEM 100990 , Cream housing used in V8 and diesel applications, stronger sppring 88oC

Black housing, 82oC, used as a stop gap in K4 engines

Grey housing, 82oC weak spring operation.

Plus the 'remote' standard stat

,

There is a mod online done by Dave Monks, using a Porsche stat housing and two Renault stat housings, some thermocouples and graph printouts, IIRC this led to development of a PRT.
