Fumes inside

Fumes insidr series 3 from time to time particularly on runs where there are lots of stops and starts, oil smell sometimes then petrol at others. Any advice??

Check manifold gasket, listen and feel around manifold for leaks[ you won't touch the hot manifold will you] also check downpipe joint.

Check fuel tank - it's right under the seat. The fuel pipe goes under the floor and behind the bulkhead, it's plastic on mine. Look for leaks at the carb body joint. Check the pipes on any emissions control system that's fitted. Blowing exhaust should be obvious - you'll hear it!

Could be crankcase pressurising and blowing oil fumes. Take the cap off the rocker cover with the engine running and feel for pressure with your hand over the hole. Don't get poking your digits in there ! See if it is worse when you rev the engine.

Thanks guys, may check out a few of those, for definite exhaust is blowing jow do I sort that? It's great fun owning a series! Gotta love them though!

Where is it blowing? If it's the manifold to down pipe, be careful!!! The studs on the manifold will be near impossible to remove, and the thread and nut will be corroded badly so if you take it off, might be a pain to sort out, as you can't buy a new manifold (should be able to get second hand, but they are likely to have the same issues.
A cheap bodge is to buy exhaust heat wrap, and wrap the joints. However, there could be a hole in the system elsewhere, or, I suspect if it happens in stop start traffic, I suspect the joint between down pipe and mid section is leaking, iirc the joint is somewhere below the cab, so they could be comming up there ???
To actually fix it, could try taking the bolts out and putting new in, or tighten what's there is if they are in alright condition, could buy new ( I think a Britpart exhaust is £55 for the 3 sections) or you could go down the bodge route, heat wrap, or, I think there's something called gumgum, that comes as a tape or like body filler

If you have a badly fitting rear door the fumes will get into the cab. Check for holes in the rear tub. Also check for petrol leaks round all fuel pipe unions and tank and exhaust connections.

I thought manifolds were readily available, don't all makes still do them?

Ah I may have lied about the manifold, I have a diesel, and when I needed a new one a few years ago, couldn't find a new one anywhere, but I've just read back its petrol, in which case I know nothing about those manifolds.

Back door is good and tub is in good order too, no leaks that I can see. What I can say is that fumes seem to come in around driver area, gear box etc....

Must be a leak in the exhaust system and plenty bits of badly designed bodywork to let the fumes up.
