Full reconditioning of the front axle

Thanks.

The "new" casing doesn't have a diff on it so it's just the current diff. I'll probably take the diff off the disco and clean it up then use that on the new axle so that I can drop the current axle off as a complete unit i.e. disconnect front prop, brake line, suspension at top, panhard rod, hockey sticks at body end, steering rods etc and just drop it. I've got/ordered/buying everything I need to build an axle with new brakes etc so I can take my time and get it perfect then just install it. The kits I'm buying include every gasket, seal and bearing new and I will be replacing all the bolts plus new half shafts, CV joints, swivels and stub axles. I want this to look like it's just come out of the factory :)

Once it's fitted I will do the rear axle too.... I replaced the brake discs, callipers and pads last year so will re-use those plus I have already ordered Timken bearings for all four wheels but need a new casing as the current one has a leak which I've fixed with chemical metal :)

Well, that's going to be a thing of beauty. Makes my in-situ refresh of bearings, diff centres and seals look very amateurish https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/axle-refurbishments.272149/

If the budget will possibly stretch, get some Ashcroft limited slip diff centres. Go on, you know you want them.

I would love to but the budget doesn't stretch that far :) Also when I sell the existing axle (it's perfectly serviceable and has just passed an MOT although it could do with one wheel bearing/tightening up the existing one) I'm going to then do the same for the rear axle....... Then I'm saving for a recon gear box :)

Just to double check:

1) It is the 3/16" brake tool for the Defender

2) Is a 300TDi Defender 1994 definitely 24 spline?

3) I have a 300TDi Discovery 1 parked on my drive for spares. If I remove both front wheels in turn and remove the half shafts so I can remove the front diff will the whole car then be able to roll down the drive as the front wheels will be free to rotate? (I don't think there is a diff lock on the disco 1)

1) No, as you will know the handbrake drum is directly attached to the rear prop shaft, with the handbrake on the rear prop cant rotate, if the prop cant rotate and both rear wheels are on the ground then they cant rotate either. Different matter if you then decide to lift one of the rear wheels.

My thinking too but just wanted to be completely safe with the job. I going to try and remove the radiator, front axle/prop/suspension and steering box for now

Thanks. I thought so but just wanted to be absolutely sure before I bought the kit.

Are you a politician? you managed to agree with both the yes and no answers, I bet you are a nightmare when discussing Brexit :D:D

:)

Thanks everyone...... Well I've got the garage all cleared out ready so just need to start getting all the bits sorted. It was absolutely tipping it down here earlier so couldn't get the bits off the disco.
