Fuel tank sender seal

Hi, I have a leaky seal around the fuel tank sender unit on my 300tdi 110, I've ordered the new seal and locking ring and wanted to know if the tank has to come off to fit the new seal and o ring or can it be done by just removing the back wheel?
Any advice greatly received!

you can do it with wheel off tank in place , watch out for poor parts and poor fit (i had to cut some of stack pipe on last one i did), plus its easy to bend float arm and so effect level reading

Thanks! Good to know I don't have to drop the tank!
Have a journey to Scotland planned next month, don't want to have to stop too often for fuel!!
