2. TD4. Recently I have been trying to improve my mpg, not that its bad or anything but I was wondering.

I have been excellerating lightly if you know what I mean, and coming off the power early with gentle braking, usually no braking required, just select the gear and go. I was wondering is it more economical when reducing speed to freewheel in nuetrel ie, rpm is tick over, or is it best to leave it in gear off the pedal but the revs stay higher, I suppose theres not much in it, but would like to do whats best.

Also while this test is going on its amazing how close people get behind you when approaching junctions and so on, as they would probably brake late and hard if the road was clear.

I guesse this would also reduce stress and wear on the braking system. Not that I could drive like this all the time. Mind you the TD 4 is not known for its nimbleness.
Early signs are showing mpg of 40+

I hear what you're saying but generally to cruise in Neutral is a very bad driving practice. If you had to do an emergency stop you could easily lock the wheels. Even with ABS a total lock up is possible. Then, you and whatever you are trying to avoid, is in trouble.

What you are doing so far is a great way to drive, money and planet wise. Don't forget to gun it once in a while to clear the engine out. However, I would not consider the 'Neutral' approach at all.

Happy Freelandering.

Most modern dezuls cut off fuel supply to the engine whilst coasting, therefore saving you more fuel than when on tickover also whilst in netreul you do not have full control of the vehicle due to no engine braking.

it said on top gear that you used more fuel in neutral as you need fuel to keep the engine running whereas if your in gear the momentum turns the engine over.

Thanks for the replys, I did think moving in nuetrel was a bad practice, so wont be going there again. It would appear though, you can save fuel if drive differently, but I think we all know that anyhow.

I definatly save fuel when accelerating more gently and keeping everything as smooth as I can.

Carrying about 700kg in the back of a td4 commercial, with AT tyres on I can get 36mpg, which to be fair I dont think is shabby at all.

It goes down to about 33 when shifting along a bit quicker.

Use half throttle and change up at progressively higher revs. By that I mean just use first to get the landy moving, say 1500 revs , then for example depending on the gearing, 1750 in second, 2000 in third 2000 in fourth, keep the revs down to the minimum engine revs per mile and as soon as the lights ahead change to red then take yer foot off and cruise to a stop.
Always try and wait for a down hill slope to accelerate, as soon as you can, change up early when going downhill this saves fuel.

You'll soon be an expert.:)

I read in a motoring mag many years ago an article where many differing vehicles from a Mini to a Disco were driven at constant speed for x miles round a test track through the range 10mph through to 70mph at 10 mph stages.

All (including the Disco) were giving better mpg at 40 than at any other speed.

I’ve tried the same thing. People will drive closer behind you when your engine breaking with no brake lights on. It takes them a little longer to realise the car in front is breaking, as it’s getting closer to them.

40 + is fantastic. my TD4 auto does 26 short runs and about 32-33 on a m-way.

Dun't seem to matter if I boot it or not MPG about same.

Many yeats ago me Dad used to work with a guy who used to turn the engine off and coast down hills (no joke). Pots of money and miserable as sin.

Theres always them new TD4 "e" FL2 - they stop and start to save fuel.

I thought that was a standard "feature" of the FL1?

get plenty to the gallon on the back of the recovery truck :)
May brother in law was going to Cornwall and hitched a lift part way by putting his car on the back of his mates 13 car transporter as he was going to Brizzle.

He gave his mate 20 quid for the ride which was more than it would have cost him in fuel at that time....dooh:doh:
