I have a 1989 110 which left the factory as a 3.5 v8 on carbs.

Last year I replaced the engine with a 3.9 on hot-wire which works very well.

I left the original fuel pump in the tank and fitted a pattern pump of the Bosch style on the upper inner wing. This has proved very noisy.

I am not sure if these pumps are inherently noisy or whether it is noisy because the supply from the pump in the tank is inadequate leading to cavitation.

I need to decide whether to replace the Bosch type pump with something better maybe a genuine Bosch, or whether to replace the pump in the tank with a high pressure version.

If I replace the pump in the tank is there a pump that will fit the tank without modification to the tank and will I need to upgrade the fuel lines?

I know this has been raised before but not in this much detail.

I think the pumps in the vehicles are pretty much a standard size.
Usually, the sender units are the things that are of a different size.

Best thing to do is check the RAVE manual to see what the part numbers are, and to see if there is an exploded diagram of the sender unit.
 
You can use the range rover classic hp pump, I have this fitted to my 90 tank ( ex doozel ) and was a strait fit except I had to extend the hose on the pump as the rrc one is a bit shorter sorry ain't got a part no tho
 
Thanks that's useful. Did the lines from pump to engine need upgrading due to higher pressure pump?
 
I had replaced the pipes prior to fitting the pump, as I managed to rip the old lines out by getting them caught up with the wiring loom and prop shaft, but tbh new 8mm id fuel line can be had pretty cheap from ebay
 
Great, will fit some new lines to be safe.

Am thinking PRC 8318 is the right pump to get.
 
yes do as above..external hp pumps are REALLY loud..mine is mounted on its own plate isolated by rubberr mounts from body and its still very loud..
i also have one thats intank..you cant hear that..

the intank one is rrc efi..external is bosch..
 
Why 2 pumps is the internal one not sufficient?

It was a 3.5L V8 on carburettors, it is now a 3.9L V8 running the hotwire injection system.

Carburettors require low pressure around 2-5 psi whereas fuel injection systems require much higher pressures around 40psi.

So yes, the internal one is not sufficient. ;)
 
Ok I see so if you had a high pressure pump like the prc 8318 mentioned above would that be sufficient on its own. I only ask ax I am about to change from 3.5 on carbs to a 3.9 on Hotwire efi

Did u fit the prc8318 as you mentioned earlier?
Was it a straight swop?
Does the sender work ?
Did your tank have a return already as mine doesn't it just vents to air from the carbs

Yes used PRC8318, straight swap in to tank.

I changed fuel lines at the same time.

Mine has separate fuel gauge sender and I already had a return connection to the tank.
