Not uncommon I hear.......

Few weeks ago simply wouldn't fire, turned over fine but wouldn't start.
Flicked the fuel pump relay after an hour, then fine....
Two weeks later same again, but will not have it...at all.My other half was getting diesel at the time, fortunately right by an independant garage.

The guy reckons £230.00 fitted new pump, warrantied & the filters..via telephone as \i wasn't there, I suggested she left it with him...
I'm confident..but racked off a little at such a stupid problem which needn't be so bloody technical..
Still, bought a defender as well now!!!!

found this forum post .. ( googled for 'td4 lp fuel pump failure causes' )

" Pump under wheel arch is a low pressure feed pump. I just changed mine. As a matter of interest, I stripped it to look for the cause of failure. Brushes had worn down to the point where it had worn through the copper strip connecting one of them. In years gone by the pump would have been screwed together and you'd have been able to buy new brushes for a couple of pounds and repair it. "Improved" design means that its a sealed unit that you need to destroy to take apart and no parts to fix it would be available anyway. So you throw away £136 worth or component for want of penny's worth of carbon brush. "

But that's 'progress'

Improved design = "No user serviceable parts inside."

The 'improved' replacement for the 'E' Type Jaguar was not a better car.

But none can beat the upgraded Travelodge bathrooms which have a label beside where the heated towel rail used to be - informing us - "The heated towel-rail has been removed for your safety."

I rest my case. :p
