Hello

Read a few posts on the fuel pump location and asembly on the mk1 td4 2003 auto.

Came across this picture and wanted to know what the round cylinder is with the 2 white collars in the front of the picture on the right?

Does this ever need replacing?

I know the other two items are the fuel pump and fuel filter.

How often should it be emptied ?
Possibly had some grit or sludge from a poor batch of fuel from a well known supermarket which has caused the car to struggle to start on a few occaisions so I figured its time to change the fuel filter and pump.
 
i drain mine usually just before winter temps set in ..
mainly to get rid of any collected water ..
bought my hippo in feb. 2012 .. immediately gave it a full service ..
at that time .. a small amount of sediment came out from the trap
since then been using 'diesel rhino' in the fuel ( disperses any water .. among other things )
so far .. on draining .. only clean fuel has come out .. no sediment or water ..
 
Based on Autologic diagnostic code, "low side fuel pressure sensor plausability" I replaced the both pump and filter today. Checked the sediment vessel, only diesel came out.

Noticed the revs stutter slightly on every start up now but settle down after 2/3 seconds. Anyone know what this is?

Didn't do it before I changed the pump and filter.

After fitment I turned ignition, listened for pump priming then started her up.
 
check the connection for the fuel pressure sensor it may be corroded there is also a common fault with the harness deteriorating and there is a replacement short harness available
 
Bit of an update.

Turns out 'injector 1' is the problem.

'Cylinder balance control' was the diagnosis.

The new LP pump is working great. The new pressure has exposed the injector problem.

Cylinder 1 : +5.03
Cylinder 2: -1.38
Cylinder 3: -3.13
Cylinder 4: -1.72

Injector retaining bolts had rattled free. Even nipped up, the Cylinder 1 reading came down to +4.53 !

Apparently the readings for each cylinder should be around the '0' mark.

It looks like the last 3 cylinders are trying to compensate for number 1 being out, hence the minus values.

Need to research how to change one of these injectors now ha ha.

Do I add it to fuel ?
Its been mentioned to me to have the injector 1, removed, cleaned & reseated with a new copper washer and sealant.
Is the Liqui Moly Injection Reiniger the sealant ?
 
Is there a version for diesel and petrol or is it a universal solution?
Ive found a German suplier on eBay (2 x 300ml bottles).
Its just advertised as 'gasoline fuel injection cleaner' (item 360605353796)

i wouldn't suggest using that in a diesel

it's an injector / fuel system cleaner .. is all ..
be loads of 'brands' about to choose from out there

they all usually have a product data sheet online ..
usually a .pdf file
( just google the 'name' and add 'safety data sheet' )
it will list the ingredients ..
then google search the ingredients 1 by 1 ..
that way you know what you are adding to the fuel .. and what it might do

Doh..........too late Ive bought it !!
Going to have to cancel the order quick.
There seems to be way too many injector cleaner fluids on the market.
I googled liqui moly as suggested.
I had been advised against using these injector cleaners by a garage I go to.
If the injector is faulty it can affect the overall operation and longevity of the diesel pumps.

Looks like Diesel purge or Bio Diesel Additive is the best option for injector cleaning.

easiest thing to do be to choose a good brand of diesel fuel 'n stick to it
most add extra lubrication additives to make up for lack of sulphur in todays diesel ..
the 'prime' diesel fuels usually have a bit more detergency for cleaning ..
some Might have a cetane booster added ..

( 2-ETHYLHEXYL NITRATE is often used as a cetane booster in diesel fuel additives )

that .. and use quality fuel filters .. 'n drain the sedimenter at service time ..

then choose an additive to suit .. ( research it first )

my choice be 'diesel rhino' .. have used the original formula since 1976 ..
( was known as 'diesel aid' .. still is in the u.s.a. ..
( only available online in the u.k.
has cleaning agents
lubrication agents
water dispersal agents
a cetane booster
and biocide to kill off any 'diesel bug'
