Hello, I'm new to the forum and also new to Land Rovers, so I hope no one minds me asking for advice. I've searched the forums and the problem with my FL1 could be due to several things. It's an X reg TD4 with only 65,000 miles on it, one previous owner and a full Land Rover service history so it's been well looked after although obviously only used for short journeys throughout its life (which may be part of the problem).

Anyway, I've had the car about 2 months and covered around 1700 miles in it without issue until about 3 weeks ago. I noticed when on motorways etc it would lose power going uphill and then pick up again when on the flat. Now it's started to run funny at all speeds. It kind of feels like it momentarily loses power then picks up again. If it does this a few times in quick succession, it's like being on the back of a kangaroo (not that I've been on the back of a kangaroo, but I'd imagine it would be like this if I had). There's no excessive smoke coming out the exhaust or anything, it starts no problem and there's no eml on.

After searching on here, I suspect it's the in tank fuel pump, but there seems to be a number of other things it could be too. Has anyone got any thoughts? Those fuel pumps are quite expensive to change only to find out it's something else. How do I start the process of elimination?

Try unplugging the MAF sensor see if it runs ok then if so you may have found your problem cost nothing except maybe an hour of your time, you will have to remove the air filter cover to get to the MAF plug, at the same time it gives you chance to check the air filter, it could be a injector, split in the intercooler hose,

Thank you, I will try unplugging the MAF tomorrow.

As an update, I've just driven to work in mainly slow moving traffic and under 2000 rpm you wouldn't think there was much of a problem. The kangaroo effect over 2000 rpm is getting worse and now there is some black smoke being chucked out the back (not loads, but noticeable).
 
Check all the vacuum pipes and all the boost pipes. The vac pipes perish and rub on components. Any leak in the vac pipes can cause a lack of boost. This will make black smoke and lack of power.
Any leak in the boost pipes will cause the same symptoms.
 
I've checked all the hoses and there was indeed a large split in the front left hand hose. I've been unable to source a new one locally with it being Sunday and New Years Eve, so I've done a bodge repair for now with an Irn Bru tin, and old inner tube and cable ties. It's cured the lumpy running so it runs smoothly until it reaches 70mph and then it's almost like there's a speed limiter on it. It won't go any faster. I've noticed the sticky on the forum regarding the turbo boost solenoid. Is this likely to be the cause of the 70mph problem?
 
Mine recently had a similar issue and it was just a hose that had popped off. Cured in two minutes. Do your proper fix on the hose and see how it goes from there.
 
Mine had a similar issue after I changed all the vacuum hoses.The one over the top of the cylinder head,inside the sleeve had collapsed.
I fitted a new boost solenoid which cured the problem.
It would go into limp mode while accelerating uphill.

Just been out in the car and it’s running loads better. Even pulling beyond 70mph.
I’ve got a full set of silicone hoses ordered and an EGR bypass. I pulled the EGR hose of to have a look and it’s caked in carbon.
Hopefully once this is done, that should be things sorted.

Don't forget to clean the intercooler too, you should do the inlet manifold but too, that is a faff ....
