Hello guys, I've just got my first land rover. The poor girl needs some love and attention so i flushed the engine, refilled with fresh oil, cleaned out sump, fresh diesel filter, rebuilt starter motor, new air filter and oil. Battery has 12.50 volts and charged. Also in the process of doing some welding etc. Anyway after all this i go to start it and NOTHING. Ive checked the first and secondary filters and they are dry. When i suck the pipe which goes to the first filter i got a mouth full of diesel. That tells me the pipe from the tank are not clogged. So my guess would be this is a fuel pump issue , has been sat for 2 months and not started. If anyone can guide me in the right direction and assist me in getting it started i will send that person a few beers ! Note this land has what i beleive is a perkins 4.236 thanks guys

Not the manual pump was also cleaned and rebuilt. When i pump it nothing draws. Am i right in saying there is a specific way to installing this ?

First, you need to check that the lift pump is not on the cam that drives it. If it is, the manual primer will not work.
The lift pump needs to be installed with, or without, a spacer block behind the pump, or the arm on the back of the pump will not pump, or may not even contact the cam. It should be fairly obvious from physical examination.
I am unsure what you mean by secondary fuel filter? Most of those just have one fuel filter head, with a CAV 296 element on it.
Bleeding air out of the filter is a job that takes some practice, and you must install the filter, preferably a Delphi one, with the 4 rubber rings, all different, in the right places. If you have a twin filter unit, it will take longer.
None of that will work unless the lift pump is pumping.
It would be helpful if you can post pictures of the filters, so I can identify what you actually have.

Also. Are you sure that it is a 4/236 Perkins? They are fitted in Series Land Rovers, but 4/203 were a much more common fitment.
You need to find the engine number, you will need it for parts ordering anyway.

Thanks for the reply. I honestly cant tell what model it is as i am unable to read the code as i cant get down the side to see it. When i refitted the pump i just bolted it straight on. So i will remove it and as you say make sure its not coming into contact with the cam lobe. If it is i take it you simply turn the engine by hand until the two piece are not in contact. As for the first filter its strange, its not really a filter but a brass tank about 4 inches high by 2 inches wide. The fuel drawn from the lift pump enters this, there is then another tube at the bottom of the tank which leads to the seconday diesel filter i beleive. Maybe its a sedimentor of some sort.

I would just kick the engine over on the starter, see if the manual primer starts working.

The thing you have posted a picture of is not a fuel filter.
Wider angle pics are more helpful, puts a bit of context on what is where.

To read numbers, and assess other jobs, you need to get a lighted mirror on an extending stick like a car aerial. They are a few quid from BM, or a motor factor.

The thing in the pic is a separator for air bubbles, and it should be fitted upright on the bulkhead, in the back leak return to the low pressure side of the fuel system.

As turboman said take the need screw out of last filter and turn over until at least filters full
I don’t know that engine make but @rob1miles has one in his 109
Can you feed the filters by gravity , should be able to test pump off engine by pushing lever and feeling for suction and pressure on connections
Don’t want any air leaks before injection pump

Yeah i have tried but the code doesnt relate to any information i can find. And the placement of it does not denote what model it is. I will take some oictures when im next in my workshop then youll know. Oh i see, yes it is installed upright on the bulkhead. That was just an old picture. Oh man ive cranked it over plenty, cracked the injectors, pumped a million times and nothing is drawing. Everything is installed how i found it and the engine ran fine

Have a look at the links I posted.
And follow it through systematically, first you need to get fuel at the filter head, then you need to bleed the filter. then the pump, then the pipes.

I will inspect it asap. Regarding the pump arm hitting the cam lobe does the engine need to be at any sort of TDC or do i just inspect visually that the cam lobe is far away as possible before installing pump ?

I think you are overthinking this. These are a very simple and robust engine.
If the engine was running, and you have re-installed the lift pump as you found it, with all the parts that came off, and you have kicked it over a bit several times, and still no manual pumping, then your lift pump diaphragm has split, and you need a new one, or just get a new lift pump, they are about 30 quid.

If it does not feel like it’s priming on my diesel then I spin the engine just to get the cam out of the way , then pressing the lever you should feel/ hear/ see it pumping air fluid or bubbles until it’s a clean squirt

Exactly. And because he has sucked fuel up the pipe from the tank with his mouth, there is no problem at the tank end either.
So of he isn't getting fuel, the lift pump is knacked.
