I've just taken my Fuel pump off my 1974 Series 3 for an overhaul. Bloody typical, everything seems totally different to the Haynes manual or other references I have found! Having ordered an overhaul kit which was labelled like so many parts "For all series 2 2A and 3 Land Rovers" So its totally useless and I've wasted yet more money! For a start the 2 valves inside seem to be fixed into the casting rather than held in by a retaining plate and any attempt to remove them will surely damage something. Secondly the Diaphram rod end is shaped like a T piece. The one I have In the kit has a slot in it so wont fit. This I found out is the later version diaphragm, but even the earlier one has a different keyed shape to this one! Finally the gasket wont fit! So, anyone know what the heck this one is??? Looks exactly the same from outside as a typical series 3 one??? Its a bitter pill to swallow how often these variations have led to me constantly getting the wrong parts. I think its about time a lot of the retailers started detailing there parts more accurately. By the way the kit I have is genuine Land Rover not a cheapie.

Sorry forgot to mention mine is a Petrol 2.25. The link above still doesn't seem to explain all these different variants? Of course the obvious answer is to take the part to a retailer but I live on an Island so rely on postage methods for parts. I could probably get over this if I could find someone who just sells the Diaphram without buying yet another kit and getting it possibly wrong again? Are they ONLY available in the kit?

I thought that but to be honest Ive been in this situation so often with this vehicle I thought keep the one that's on here now and rebuild it rather than risk buying a whole unit and finding that doesn't fit the studs on the engine......... (looks bewildered lol) Im coming round to a home made engineering rebuild.

just been trying to take the valves out but they have been pressed in with what I would presume is a special tool (lots of little tabs pressed down around them) Could this be some kind of Military fuel pump variant maybe??

Bloody typicle. Looks very much like its a Massey Ferguson Tractor Fuel lift pump! No wonder this one got me stumped!!!! Have decided to buy a new pump for a LAND ROVER and am confident it should fit the studs on the engine. Cant believe what some people put on these Land Rovers! If your not the original owner its a nightmare! Thanks for all your help anyway Oxides. :)

What astonishes me is that someone would have gone to all the trouble of fitting the wrong bit when the correct parts are so readily available. Smacks of a desperate dig through the old parts box on a Sunday morning to get a landy going then not bothering to sort it properly 'cos the bodge worked. Shows how many old British vehicle bits fit each other, though. I'm sure I've seen an equivalents list somewhere on line.....

Got my new fuel pump yesterday :) Fits nicely........probably because its the right one! haha. As expected though the union connector from the fuel tank at the pump end is totally different....:( Rather than get a whole new line, can I just get the fitting to match the series 3 pump on its own and simply swop it? If so anyone know where I can get one please? Have been looking at lrs and paddocks but cant find much. Mind you some don't have pictures so its hard to know what it is your buying sometimes!

I believe it's a 3/8 UNF. I had problems getting them. I was using flexi GP hose. What is your fuel line? Plastic or copper?

plastic. But had a brain wave. I am re newing the pump to carb fuel pipe complete so am thinking about taking the connection off that old one and fitting it to the input end of the pump. Just need to see if its the right thread .
