you cannot tweak the pump on the auto because of the edc system but you can have it re-mapped to have the same effect.

my disco 1 is a 1996 ES Auto, one of the very early ones, yes its got the edc system, but i thought there was no where i could get remapped?

where is the brain box located on a disco 1? and who remaps these old discos?

i also have a 96 300tdi auto with edc and she is a real biatch to cold start, takes at least 10 times to start with a bellow of white smoke then rest of the day is fine?? ive changed the glow plugs, tried a new battery with no avail but if the weird thing is if i connect jump leads it fires first time?? so would a remap cure this problem as im out of ideas now???

Kevin
this is now my disco behaves, this is strange will watch with intrest all replies

if it starts ok with jump leads i cant see how a remap is gunna cure that!

if its sluggish at turning over or slow maybe the starter is faulty? hence it starts ok with jump leads? just a thought?????

I never had that problem with my ES,however...my dads got a 98 auto with EDC that does that non starting thing. There are several places that do remaps or add on boxes for EDC 300tdi,have a google or look in LRO.They come up on Ebay VERY occasionally

ive tried a new battery ,no success il have a go with a new earth and see what happens im not too clued up so if someone has a quick explanation of the best way for extra earth and where to connect to engine ,etc cheers

I was TOLD that disco 300s had a problem with earthing through the handbrake (?) and melting it....on one I had the handbrake get V hot, stopped and put an ad hoc extra earth on it and it solved the prob.....something in the story, maybe?Several that have been through my hands had an extra earth to the block already.Dont know about it solving the start problem tho',I had thought that it was a fuel problem....air in somewhere or the EDC playing silly buggers....mind you my dads one turns over fine, for ages, before it starts.....any ideas gladly received, chaps!

dnt no much on that car, but i have got remapping equipment il have a check to see if i have the files for your car, worth a try if it only gona cost ya a pint ;)

i wasnt looking to remap for more power im more concerned about the way the thing starts 1st thing in the morning ,im gonna try the extra earth ,as for starter why would it be fine for the rest of the day maybe im wrong but if the starter was faulty it would happen all day? is there anyway you can check if the edc is working in proper order? and where do i start looking for air in the fuel ? test etc all help most appreciated someone must have had a edc auto with simular problems and found a cure somewhere :D

sounds like it could be sucking air back in overnight....have a look at your injector spill pipes, see if they are all good and the end one has a stopper in.For starters make sure all fuel pipe unions are tight (but dont go all rambo on them!) to and from pump, filter, injectors and return line.Make sure filter is on tight. If this doesnt help then do a search or two,its been writ up before how to check fuel is coming up good.If you attack the seperater have new seals first.
Good luck, all the info is on here somewhere in posts or usual probs.

PS, have you tried starting it with the fuel cap off?Wild guess.but there is a step by step on clearing the breather.....

More thoughts on low starter effort.....

run a lead from battery pos + to the thinner wire connecter at the starter...this should run the starter,if it works better, check the thin wire to the starter for brittleness and good connecter.A wire with a cracked conducter would warm up and expand but give restricted current when cold. Not likely,but.....

Clean the surface of the starter motor : its possible for oil and other crud to accumulate on the outside of the starter, hold moisture and cause a partial short, possible but not likely! This could explain why the problem when first started,ie the heat cooks off the moisture.Even so,its worth the effort of disconnecting battery neg- ,disconnecting cables from starter and giving it a good scrub with a stiff nylon brush and making sure the connecters have bright metal.

Take the main earth off from its body contact and clean so theres bright metal on both body and connecter.Make another earth to the block from the battery neg- : if you dont have air con there are some nice spare threaded holes close by.

Clutching at straws,I know !!Have a listen to the engine bay with the ignition off...hear any whining noise ?Some EDCs whine when off,not sure what it is but its a current drain. It comes on on mine at ignition start position.

...thats all I can think of for now but I'd be interested to hear any results you get

finally cured the problem,it was the leak off pipe from the last injector to pump that had a split in it so replaced all leak off pipes as they were a bit shabby checked the lift pump was working and hey presto starts first time so thanks to all who replied and sent me in that direction wish i had posted before a new battery was bought but at least i have a spare one :D

hello

as it says, can this be done on a 1996 300tdi auto?

i have just done this on 200tdi with great effect:D:D

Which pump is on it, I have a 96 300tdi auto engine with the same pump as is on my 96 manual Disco - so if it has a cable actuated fuel pump then yes, tweak away (with care). If it's the later one with EDC as said no, but not all autos seem to have the EDC. There are some places that do 300tdi EDc tweaks.
