Hello,

This is my first post on here so i hope im in the correct place.

I currently have a Defender 90 53 plate 64000 miles and have been running it on bio diesel for 9 months with out a problem, until last week when the fuel pump failed and i came to a grinding halt.

This has since been replaced, but the question i would like to ask is, how can i tell from looking at the old pump if bio diesel was to blame for the fault?

There are a few things i do incorrectly to the car and was wondering if these could have added to it failing.

1, turning ignition on many times a day to charge my mobile and not starting the engine, leaving the ignition in the on position.

2, turing the key before the glo lights go out, (first diesel for me, just getting used to it)

my last question is. What are the main reasons that a fuel pump will fail? is 60000 odd miles about right?

Thanks for your help, and once again hope this is in the right section, first post for me, and i absolutely loving the Landy :)

As long as the viscocity of the bio diesel is ok then I doubt it would have contributed to it's failing.

The in tank pumps are a common weak point on the TD5's.

I'd just put it down to typical wear and tear to be honest. If you'd replace d 2 in a shortg period I'd start to worry but one at 64000 miles I would consider to be ok.

Do you still have the old pump?

NEVER let a garage keep old parts!
ALWAYS insist on getting ALL your parts back, and they are YOURS.

How do you know the pump was broken?
Maybe it was just a choked filter? This causes the pump to make a terrible squealing noise which goes away when a new filter is fitted.
