hi there, was doing a rear x member yesterday but the fuel pipe from the tank to the lift pump (the one that comes from the level sensor?) was seized to hell, and ended up ruining both sides of the union! :-(

so i checked the Illustrated Parts Catalog and i think i am going to have to replace the whole pipe, right to the front. part no. ESR246?? but cant seem to find it anywhere!

also i will need a sender unit. do they differ much? or will i have to get the VIN and find the exact one?

cheers

What do you have sticking out of your fuel tank? I'd imagine there should be the fuel level sender unit (three wires to it, nothing else), a fuel pickup pipe and a fuel return pipe on a 19J. Is yours any different? The pickup pipe has an outside diameter of 8mm, and the unions at the lift pump are 1/2" UNF. I bought the parts in from SSL Diesel Parts (SSL Diesel Parts - Low Cost diesel fuel Parts.) and made the line up myself.

You will need the following:

8mm Brass Straight Compression Fitting (to join nylon pipe to pickup pipe)
Brass Straight Compression Fittings BSC from SSL diesel

1/2" UNF Filter Head Tube Nut Kit (for lift pump union)
Filter Head Tube Nut Kit from SSL diesel Parts filter head

Brass Tube Supports (insert into nylon pipe to prevent collapsing at joints)
Brass Tube Supports pk10 BTS from SSL diesel Parts Unit of

4 or 5 Metres of Nylon Fuel Line
plastic nylon tubing from SSL diesel Parts plastic tubing

I know that Land Rover will charge you the Earth for such a pipe, I was quoted over £60 for the same length of pipe between the pickup pipe and the lift pump, so I made my own up at a fraction of the cost.

Take at a topic I made a few weeks ago here:

Woow! Cheers fOr the replies fellas! Yes at that price I will not be buying one!

That is the tank is question I think. On the sender unit there is the 3 electrical plugs and the one fuel pipe, the return goes in at the top of the tank..

I notice some part numbers have been superseded?

Thinking about it, I only need to make up a section at the end with the union, the rest of the pipe is fine.
Just to confirm, this pipe runs from the tank to the lift pump, not the filter?

Definately, I thought that this morning! Il get a small section of the pipe and just one of those compression fittings.

Cheers for the help fellas.

Seem to be 3 different pipe clip types

79121
78122
NRC5415

All appear to be plastic - am guessing when the guys say 'brass tube supports' they mean these pipe clips rather than supports made of brass

Close?

pos, do you have any pics of what you did at the tank end? the existing pipe had a 90deg angle then the union into the tank. i will need to make a small section of straight, then the bend with the union after it. the existing pipe is metal so would those compression fittings work?
Ta!

Your setup sounds different to mine. I have a metal pickup pipe straight from the tank, but I gather yours is a plastic sender unit / pickup combo? Do you have a photo of your setup so we can see what the best work around is? In this case, I inserted an 8mm brass tube support into the 8mm nylon fuel line (to prevent the fuel line from crushing when the compression fitting is tightened up) and then tightened the compression fitting onto the nylon fuel line and the pickup pipe. Here is a photo:

Does that make sense?

ahh right, nice one. did you make the 90deg bend? can you buy bends or do you have to make them? i recon a nylon pipe would probably kink.. but not sure how id bend a metal one!

cheers

Do you mean the bend where it comes up from the chassis and then connects to the tank? It's just a gentle bend, no 90 degree inserts or anything and it hasn't kinked. Yours is a totally different tank and pickup pipe setup though isn't it, so this would not work. Take a look at the bend at the lift pump:

I'm just going to get some 8/9mm fuel pipe from halfords and jubilee clip it in nice and tight. As long air can't get in, itl be sound.
