Right, the sh1tpart lift pump has been leaking oil for a while now (it was leaking before i did the engine up but tried fixing with a homemade diaphragm which has improved matters but not by much). In the end I bought a delphi unit, which looks way better quality and much more heavy duty.

My question is, with the britpart unit, there is a thick spacer of sorts between the pump and the block (and gasket obviously) but the delphi one is supplied with just a gasket. Does it need the spacer or not?

Engine is a 2.5 N/A by the way

Not sure about the 2.5 but on 2.25 the spacer is needed. Place the flanges together and check the height of the lever, that will tell you.

if you have flat cast plate you fit spacer if later long lever pump , if ali plate it has spacer built in , hence later use of long lever pump and spacer for retrofits

Right, the old plate is the flat one and the old pump doesnt have the spacer. What happens if you fit the pump without the spacer?

Ok swapped, the pump for another britpart one which is a new one in the shed and this time I fitted the spacer as the spare one I had was the wrong size for the delphi. Result is a much better fit, and it started 2nd crank even with a bit of air in the system, am very pleased with it :)
