Any ideas why my fuel gauge is misbehaving, even though there's over half a tank of petrol, sometimes it stays on empty other times it fluctuates between empty and full, recently put a new sender in the tank could I have put it in wrong?or are the 2 wires on the sender wrong, any ideas, landrover 110 v8

Mine only works when the tank is full, as soon as it gets 3/4 or below the needle is all over the place, the fuel light still works properly though even when the gauge is below empty?????

Joys of a tratter....

I get this when I have done some serious under-chassis cleaning, water sits around the terminals on the sender and gives the odd readings. A quick dry and re-application of water repellent and it is fine (until the next time).

My gauge has a mind of its own as does the fuel light.
I can fill the tank and the gauge reads full with no fuel light.
Drive a mile or so and the fuel light comes on even with the fuel gauge pegged at full.
Use half a tank and the fuel gauge sometimes reads full or half or empty and the fuel light is on where ever the gauge reads.
Despite my best efforts to sort it its been like this for years so I rely on the trip counter to refuel after 240 miles or so.

If I remove the fuel pump/sender and operate it manually then sometimes it works just fine and sometimes it plays up as above. Put a meter on the fuel gauge sender and it reads as expected with no jumps or broken connections on the track. I suspect a wiring fault but have been unable to trace it. Pain in the butt so just been living with it. It was like that when I bought the motor and the previous owner had spent a fortune at his local LR dealer trying to solve it. Any ideas greatfully received.
