Howdy

I have a Defender 110 TD5 1999.
Recently my fuel gauge stopped showing my fuel levels. I didn't know whether it was the sender unit that was faulty or what....

I have taken it into my local mechanic, who is a good guy, and he has taken the diesel tank out and had a look. I thought I could just replace the fuel level send er unit, but I have just had an email from Paddocks saying that the fuel pump and sender unit are all one and I would have to buy the complete part, which is bloody well expensive considering teh fiel pump is ok.

Does anyone have any ideas what to do or has anyone experienced a similar problem?

Thanks

What was he doing, checking the tank to see if it had fuel?
He could have bench tested it as above, hope you are not getting ripped.

Never seen a pump and sender in one complete unit. Even if they came as one, you should be able of separate and change one or the other. I am not 100% sure about the TD5, could research.

On the standard Defender you have to lower the tank to get at the pump. A lot of people cut holes in their tub floor instead, but as standard you don't get a handy little hatch like on the Discovery.

Yes, you'd have thought that waggling the float arm and observing the gauge would tell you whether there was a problem, or checking the resistance between the sender terminals with a meter with the arm in different positions would be informative.

Is your speedo working? I know the fuel gauge is tied to the sender via the speedo. My fuel gauge started working again, once I changed my speedo (mileage increased, but wouldn't show speed).

Possibly a wire break somewhere? Does the chassis harness, go through the chassis? Or was it removed at some point and tied above? If the latter, there are a few areas that may smash the wiring or cause a break over time.

Where abouts are you?

I have an untested TD5 sender and pump in my garage you can have if you want it. I was told it worked when I bought it.

You could possibly just swap over the sender bits or clean it up and use this one.

Thanks Guys!
James 6546........I am in Southern Spain!!

I am going to check through all the wiring...I am sure that is the issue.
Thanks to everyone for your feedback.

It is possible to change the sender on the TD5 pump BUT the parts are not available so you need to scavenge another pump for parts. I've been having all sorts of problems with my fuel gauge reading whatever it likes. I'm pretty sure its a wiring issue but have never been able to track it down. I've been looking on and off for four years with no success.
