I was furkling about in the engine bay this weekend and decided to purge my fuel filter. Small bowl in hand I loosened the drain plug on the bottom and by operating the fuel pump level pushed out about 1/2 a cup of milky-murky diesel.

Possibly time for a new filter methinks...

So on eBay we have ... (in no particular order)

Reisse £11
Mann £8
Purolator £8
Britpart £7
Bearmach £6
Allmakes £6
Comline £12
Coopers £8
OEM (LR) £15 link to eBay

There are some other (unidentifiable brands) from around £8.

All prices are rounded off and inc shipping etc. There were some notable variances, I saw someone selling a Britpart for £20 for example ...

So which one is the best ??
We need a sedimentor/CAV type and I am going towards liking the idea that I can see what the sedimentor is catching so I am heading towards one on these ... < linky >

Over all they are a lot cheaper than the standard fitting ... < linky > (mind you JGS are expensive at the best of times...) and the HDF 296 replacement filter cartridge is only £3 < 296 filter | eBay >.

I have one of them. Got it off eBay from a marine diesel shop in Preston for a tenner because it was shop soiled ??? Go figure - it looked new to me and had never been used. Must have been a display item. The metal bowl units are cheaper.

CAV Diesel Fuel Filter / Water Trap Sedimenter Boat | eBay

I buy the filters 10 at a time for £18 and in two years have used two filters.

CAV 296 Fuel Filter Elements (Pack of 10) Diesel Lucas | eBay

I also use the filters for my homebrew filtering. I got free delivery on the filters because I got the filter housing from them as well.

I went for the Delphi with the glass bowl as I like the idea that I can see the state of the fuel, if there is any water etc etc...

I've attached a pic of it installed, during which I cracked the siamese nylon fuel line when I opened it up. Hence the join and the new bit of blue line.

Talking of fuel line, is this normal to have pre-shaped nylon lines ??
