My fuel pump motor doesn't sound too good. This noise has slowly become apparent over time. Do we think it's the fuel filter slowly getting blocked, or the fuel pump motor at fault?

Fu-el filter hasn't been changed to my knowledge. Pumps in the fuel tank.

video removed.

Guess you want to change the filter to find out. Not going be a wasted job if it hasnt been done in eleven years.

I often have filters choke up on me - dirty fuel in places where I can't even pronounce their names.

When filters start to block you suffer fuel starvation at high levels of consumption - going up a steep hill or overtaking for example.

In a diesel it's like hitting the rev-limiter - In a petrol it's like turning the ignition off.

IMHO you would have felt these symptoms long before you hear any change in the note of the pump.

I therefore conclude that it's the pump on its way out.

Could be wrong though.

Change the filter first and find out.

I don't like the smell of petrol so this job could be fun. The one good thing abou tit is it could be the last fix required.

The part code for me pump is WFX000070 but microcat ses it's been superseded by WFX000190. They is over £200 from what I’ve seen so far. Can see some on ebay second hand but not sure about using them.

Just been looking on Youtube and a few peeps have the same noise but on other vehicles. So I’ve left them a message to ask what they did to sort it out. Didn’t think of this before when puting the video up.

Hippo,

I would definitely look at fitting an after market pump in a petrol Freelander. When my TD4 was failing I did a load of research into Walbro pumps. These are used in motorsport and some have used them in diesels but they are only rated for petrol.

Just match the length and diameter of the pump that is already fitted to your sender unit. See which filter sock you can fit (or maybe match pump intake diameter and fit the old one) and save yourself about £120.

Just make sure the flow rate is equal to or greater than the stock pump.

Try http://http://www.fuelpumpsonline.co.uk/walbro-motorsport-pumps-25-c.asp

Thanks for the info. Will have a look at that and report back on what happens. :)

I contacted the fuelpumpsonline people but sadley they couldn't match one of their pumps to fit/replace mine. Good idea though. Ere's a cookie.

My fuel pump ran down last week, before its about to, it became very noisy when start the vehicle...

Did you fix this?
Err yes and no. The rattle noise I thought was coming from the in tank fool pump was actually coming from the eggsource. We think the baffles are loose in the eggsource. Fool pump motor went a bit quieter after the filter was replaced. Not a nice job to do.
