Hi guys,

New member and 1st post !!

This is also my first experience of land rover.

I have just bought an 06 plate TD4 Sport auto 5 door, and I am a bit scunnered at the poor economy / mpg.

I appreciate there are many posts on this issue, and driving styles etc can have an impact etc.

However I am just about to fill up for the fourth time, the first 2 tanks (13 gallon) returned approx 380 miles, therefore just short of 30 pmg !!

The first tank was mostly motorway driving @ 70mph, the second was local short journeys, schoolrun etc.

On the third tank however with a mix of both short journeys and motorway driving I have only managed to rack up 280 miles, again a 13 gallon fill, and therefore approx 21.5 mpg !!

Any suggestions as to influincies would be greatly appreciated.

I am technically "dum" when it comes to under the bonnet practices.

Am I wrong to expect a better return than I have achieved ?

Cheers

Docksy

welcome to Hippoo world.
Yu ae getting average returns.

the best answer we have come up with is to leave it in the garage, that gives pretty good mileage and reduces the risk of mechanical failures ;)

No temps drop, Greenjeepster, usual Scottish Feb / Mar, about 10 degrees cent.

Model is a 2006, 06 plate, Freelander TD4 Sport auto 5 door, with 15,000 miles on the clock, so no issues with engine needing run in to improve mpg.

Was hoping to hear of a common fault that could have been put right !!!!

Cheers for the reply guys.

seems poor, my petrol averages 340 miles on a tank, mainly motorway tho. averages bout 27 to gallon in winter n 32 to gallon in summer. the auto box won't be helping you.

i agree wiv juddy boy. . .i got an auto td4 git aboot 34 -38 bout town can drop ta 32, but on motoway 70mph wif cruise on ive got 40mpg. . .sure ya not stuck in sports mode. . . .:)

I have no proof, but I believe that the gas quality goes up and down sometimes. I notice great changes for no reason in fuel economy, and I think it has to do with the amount of ethanol in the fuel. Alcohol burns faster and hotter than gasoline.

yep i have noticed that too jeepster . . .but my fuel economy really improved after i fitted the go faster gismo. . .mind you its even better wif tesco's finest [snort]. . . .:) :) :)

what "go faster gismo" is that Ming ?

If i could get mid to late 30's mpg, as you state, i would be alot happier, as i do approx 20,000 miles per year !

what year and mileage has yours done ?

p.s. Defo not in sports mode !!

Ta, Docksy

well docksie mines er 2002 td4 auto wif 60,ooo ont clock ,the gismo i got is a german one . . . .but rover rons is even better, ya have to keep um well maintained , and they pay ya back. . .:) :) :)

With you now,

I have just ordered a Roverron Tu3,

hopeing to see some significant pulling power and i am also opeing this will improve the economy with less downturn gear changes etc.

Cheers for the posts.

docksy if your gittin er lot of down turn in gears . . .check yer induction intake rubbers , also might pay ya to change yer engine breather filter ,fuel filter, and auto box oil ,worth a check , and yes rr box is the dogs, but if you heavy foot it you will use more fuel , but normal driving it will improve it. . .best oh luck earthling. . .:)

Hi Docksy and welcome to the boards

I have a 12month old TD4 auto with 27k on the clock and the figures you quote seem about right compared to mine - Roverrons gizmo can make all the difference tho - I tend to run mine switched to #9 as I love the extra throttle response and power, so this only gives me a little improvement (just shy of 400miles per tank) However, on middle settings and on an A road run (Av about 55ishmph) I saw close on 450miles per tank!

Just had it serviced, filled up and turned the wick back up to #9 (I can't help meself) so I will let you (Probably use a tank by Tuesday:( )

cheers Outlander,

That has cheered me up a little,;)

The roverron gismo you have, is it the Tu3 ?

I ordered this tuning box yesterday,:D

450 miles from a tank would be sweet, most of my runs will be about 65-70 mph on motorways.

Yes its the TU3, I went for the remote kit that allows you to adjust 3 presets from the glove box but, to be fair, I have never fitted it - in fact the gizmo is fitted onto a patch of velcro on the top of the battery so that (if needs be) it can be taken off (like on the, ahem, frequent (twice in the last 6 weeks) occasions that I have put unleaded instead of diesel in) if you need to call out Land Rover Assist. To be fair the guys who come out aren't that bothered but dealers will do anything to worm out of a warranty.
I always keep a pair of pliers and some gloves in the car just in case I need to whip it off in a hurry (takes less than a minute once you have the knack)

As I said, 450 was the absolute tops that I have seen and that was really trying to keep the mpg up.
