Hi guys could anyone advise where to get a s/h fuel cooler,and what sort of job is it to change on a td5, many thanks.

what year is your fuel cooler? There are 2 types. There is a cylinder shaped one with 3 coolant connections. there is a sardine can shaped one with 2 coolant connections.

No probs. This is the cheapest place that I've found for the cylinder type coolers. I need to get one myself.

Terrain Vehicles Land Rover TD5

They are easy to change.

1)Remove the 3 bolts holding on the engine cover. Lift the cover off.

2)Undo the jubilee clips for the coolant hoses and remove the hoses.

3)Pull the fuel line connector covers back to remove the fuel lines.

4)Undo the 4 bolts that hold the cooler in place

5)Bolt down new cooler

6)Refit fuel hoses

7)Refit coolant hoses

8)top up coolant system, Bleed system and check for leaks

9)Re-fit engine cover

gawd bless ya ratty what a gentleman saved me in ex of £200 and weeks of searching many thanks, I geuss its easier to change the whole part rather than the o rings.

As far as I'm aware they're sealed units. At £230-£250 new they aint cheap.

I've had 2 of the buggers fail on me now and have also bought 2 knackered ones off ebay that were meant to be good. I've currently bypassed mine.

I was given another one to try the other day. I should be fitting it in the next couple of days so I'll see if I can take some photos for you as I do it.

With summer coming up I'm about to buy one from the company I gave you the link to irrespective of if this other one is ok or not.

I've just read your post about your coolant leak. You may well find that the jubilee clips need adjusting or that one of the the coolant hoses is split/perishing. With your type of fuel cooler they generally fail INSIDE causing fuel to get into the coolant. This then tops up your coolant level. There are NO external O ring seals. They are sealed by the coolant hose being pushed over the ridge on the connector and then held in place with jubilee clips.

Before you go ordering a replacement it might be worth checking. Depending on the exact model/year there may also be a plastic T-piece connected to the hose coming from the bottom of the expansion tank and linking the fuel cooler and heater hoses. If one of the connections here were to leak it would cause the coolant to track down the hose to give the impression of a leaky fuel cooler.

Your best bet would be to whip the engine cover off and then have a good look for the leak. You may need to drive the vehicle with the cover off to build up pressure in the pipes which may help to make the leak more obvious.

Have a good look at and around the expansion cap too. I've just had to replace mine again after just 8 months. If the pressure valve goes weak it will release pressure and vent some of your coolant out in the process.
 
Thank again mate, I have had the cover off, the leak is deff coming from the front of the cooler from under the car i can see up to it, the leak is coming from the front end looks like a cap, there is a hole where it joins that is the drip point.
I have been in touch with the company that you sent the link for they had a cooler showing on the website, It even would let me buy it, as it is just along the coast from me i thought i would go get it, so phoned this morning to arrange the ONE they had has been sold, waiting for a guy to collect on tues, thought it might be you ratty!!,.I have located another one locally but they are like rocking horse sh##.Paid 45 plus the guy will fit for me for an hours labour.Hopefully that will be the cure of my coolant loss, time will tell..... thanks again for your help.:)

My 1999 td5 disco has a leak from the fuel cooler i noticed today whilst fitting the egr bypass.
I found this thread. how do the fuel pipes come off? they arent obvious to me.
I have found second hand on ebay , is this the way to go?

They have plastic lugs that you have to squeeze to enable them to be pulled off. Slide the rubber covers back to see the lugs.
 
Guys they all leak from the front cover VERY COMMON PROBLEM

NO NEED to remove it either or replace it, just fit new "o" rings. Job done.

Did mine last thrusday........simple job apart from the clamps can be a little "fiddly" but you can if you want use jubilee clips instead. Took about 20 mins max and with a crappy lead light in the dark...... (dont they always leak at the best of times)

Heres the leak.......only evident with engine OFF and cold........

thats great, how do theos clamps come off then? do you line up the plastic lugs?
also where do the O rings come from, main dealer?
 
Sorry for reviving this thread but I haven´t found anything more updated than this. I´m now in process to spot a coolant leak as I noticed that the level drops from time to time and hopefully is not HG failure as there is no weird smoke, temperature is perfect , no oil mixed or hose pressure (well, if the coolant tank cap is removed after a while still having some pressure).

As I haven´t been able to spot the leaking I´m starting by the weakest points so I decided to change the fuel cooler o rings, where can I find a good quality ones? as all the links are broken.
