Hi ming,

Thanks and as you like this kind of pictures I'll add some new ones. (Over the Christmas period my printer went down and so bought a new one which is a scanner and copier as well, so here a pic. of:

1. My very first car with which I (standing next to it) started my now 65 years as driver

2. my second car (Morris Mini) with my youngest daughter standing behind it.

3. My third car with my wife and both girls.

4. The same with my bro-inlaw next to it but taken from a better/clearer angle.

Hi all,

With the winter ahead I think it's about time someone got this thread put to life again...:D . Today, after having the car for 8 years, with every year of it the same angre in the winter that after doing short errand trips the fbh stops working when the car back in the garage again giving the usual/normal fumes and smells which were mostly appreciated by the wife when she put the laundry for drying in the garage..., so, today I took all my courage in hands to start working on this item. First of all I checked whether it was possible to get to the outside temperature sensor (ots from now on) from below, which isn't, then I tried to see whether I could interrupt somewhere the wires (brown/yellow and slate/green) so that I could leave the ots in place and operational if desired, but again no luck unless I took the left hand thick rubber hose away, didn't fancy that either, so in the end I just pulled the wires as far as possible through the front bumper holes and cut them through straight away. Now I have the two wires available and the plan is, as someone else already did and explained inhere, to have the 2 wires connected/prolonged to come in the cabin and to have a switch put on (On/Off switch, when On the fbh will stop anyway after the cooling water has reached a certain temperature, so no real need to have the ots still in the picture in my opinion). Have the switch and the wires but can't get the bl.... things through to go from the enginecompartment into the cabin. So the situation is that I have the two wires hanging in the enginecompartment as I can't get the two extra wires to end up in the cabin. Have tried on the left (behind the cooling bottle) but to no use, the rubber grommet where the whole bunch of cables goed through has even an extra kind of nipple which I cut and tried to have a leadwire go through whereafter I could connect the two other wires to it afterwards but no luck. Also tried the other side, released the three screws of the fuse/relay box but this box can hardly be moved and also impossible to go through via there. Any ideas what other way I could try ?? (Otherwise I'll just have to put the switch somewhere in the enginecompartment but then there is no switchcontrol while driving).

sorry but why bother disableing it

sorry but why bother disableing it

Well, as I mostly do very short errand trips the temperature of the engine isn't high enough to have the fbh stopped automatically before I arrive back home again. This means the whole shutdown routine of the fbh happens at home inside the garage. This brings along fumes and exhaust smells which I don't like at all and neither does my wife, especially not if she just put the laundry in the garage to dry ......., so my idea was (since 7 years) and is to have the fbh only get in operation if my journey will be sufficient long to have it stopped automatically (by means of the water temperature) and in all other situations to have it disabled.

OK. . . . .I understand Willo ,I will ask Porky to look into FBH circuit for you as he is good at leccy fings as he's er furra bread [Ihave not got one on mine, however I do understand its logic] their is a way to get the cables through ,as I done it for my spot lights and quite a few other mods, i will try and get some photo's for you and explain my method. . . . .however getting back to your FBH it might be better and safer to fit a heavy duty relay so you could fuse down the i/p to relay to say 500ma [1/2amp] thus reducing fire risk in motor. . . . . .will ask Porky to come up with a circuit for you ,and i will look at route when weather is better. . . . . PS nice pics.:)

Search 'FBH' in archives, lots of good info. I prefer a dash mounted switch to feed a fused permanent live both to FBH terminal 3 and blower fan relay terminal 86. This gives complete control over FBH and allows pre-heating of the engine and cab before startup. D..

Hi Ming and Dan,

Thanks for the answers but today I gave it another go and I managed to get through via the grommet which houses the cable to open the hood. As for the switch, the cables I took are just signal wires, no power coming through it, as a matter of fact they are really tiny ones. Soldered a slightly thicker pair on it and put a 3A On/Off switch on it. The switch I located next to the fusebox at the (for us lefthanded steering) driver's side. It's out of sight when the lid of the fusebox is closed and if needed it's always accessible/available, even while driving. All it is is an imitation of the temperature sensor (Off = warm weather, On = below 5°C), as far as I can see all the rest will keep going as normal. When I switch it on, it will keep the fbh running until the coolingwater has reached the, I think, 80°C or until I put the switch to Off (temperature mounted above 5°C).

Hereafter some pics.
1. picture of the original wires as I cut them through the bumper slot.
2. Is a view of the grommet where the new cable (white one) goes through, and
3. is a pic. of the switch and it's location.

Ciao.

Sorry but pic. 1 no good at all, took just another one (became pic.3 now), here it is:

Hi ming,

Thanks and first time I'll drive the car again (tomorrow that is) I'm going to start the car, get it out of the garage and put the switch to ON, as temperature is around 10°C it's not going to take that long before the water reaches the some 80°C temperature I hope, will see if the whole system will switch off automatically. (Should do as nothing spec. done except the ots replaced by the switch but the modus operandi as such unchanged. Will let you know afterwards how things worked out.
Ciao.

(Remember the first time I brought this up ? Must be "some" years now, right ??:D :D :D Finally got the guts to cut the bl... wires:) :) :) ).

Hi again,

Here a status report for the updated fbh operation...:D
As I said yesterday I would take the car out today and check out things, well here what I noticed:
Took the car out of the garage and put the new switch to ON, after some secs. the fbh started to work. When I arrived at the shop (about 50 kms away) the fbh exhaust pipe did not release any gasses anymore, (felt with my hand under it, the pipe was luke, I even blocked it but nothing came out), but the system was closing down it's routine I guess as I could hear a kind of spindown of a fan. After some 15-20 mins. we drove back home again and as the complete cycle wasn't apparently not finished the 1st time I put the switch to ON again as I thought, with the cooling water already close to the prescribed temperature to stop the fbh operation, this time I would notice a clearer situation when arriving home, and I did. When I arrived home everything was stopped, no fbh, no spindown and the fbh exhaust was cold. So it looks as things work as I hope they would. In complete control over the fbh start function with everything else kept as it used to be, this contrary to the other way as some members did, namely to connect the power straight into the fbh. In their case they have to cut down the power themselves I guess as I think that, as long as it gets power feeded, the fbh will keep running ?
Anyway, glad everything seems to work ok. :) :) Ciao

Thanks for that willo just done the fbh mod today after a failed sensor seems to work perfectly and a bit of wire and a switch has left my bank ballance intact for once. thanks again

Correction !!!!!!!!!

The distance I did was 5 kms, irpt 5 kms and not 50 kms as in my original post. That's why the system was just in the switch down routine when I arrived at the shop. After 5 kms. Sorry.
(Guess everyone who read my first post must have thought the bl... thing didn't work as after 50 kms still not closed down completely...;) )

Hi cwinossett,

Congrats.
And only as a matter of pure finance it's worth to be done. Also when not really needed it will now save the dieselfuel it otherwise would have burned idle....

Hi all,

With the temperature being only 2°C I made this afternoon a couple of very short trips, each time I returned home I entered the car in the garage, mostly to enjoy the absolute silence and good smell in the garage with no running down FBH anymore, was a real delight.:drum: :D

If it's owt like mine it probably runs for ages after engine turned off and uses **** loads o fuel.
