Hi

I have a defender 90, 2000, td5, recently changed all wheel bearings, front swivel joints, brake discs, pads - the lot. shortly after finnishing the job and feeling good about it all, i get a cyclic noise from the front off side wheel , sounds like a stone in the tyre, but it goes as soon a i touch the brakes! swapped over the wheels front to back no difference.

Had the wheels off checked the swivel pins again, and bearing all apear ok, removed the mud guard just in case. Not sure what to do now, when jacked up there is no movement at 3- 9 oclock or 12 - 6 !

Thoughts were CV joints - but no noise on full lock either way.

As the noise stops when i touch the brakes i figure it must be play in the hub ! but where ?

Any advice welcome - thanks in advance.

just an update, because i think i'm loosing it !
Put it in for an MOT thursday and it passed no problem !!
so spent yesterday stripping down the offside hub etc down to the swivel housing, everything seems fine, although i think the swivel pins were a bit too tight.

When i rebuilt it a few months ago the only thing i didn't repace was the bottom pin all the bearings were new. I dont see how that could be the cause but i'm going to change it for peace of mind.

Can anyone think of anything else worth repalcing while its all apart?

Have you got your anti rattle clips/springs in your brake calipar to stop the pads rattleing?

you dont need to change bottom pin ,and i wouldnt ,bearings can be changed and housing removed without ,swivel brg preload should only be enough to remove all free play and not stiff as earlier defenders as they have bushes and not bearings as you have .remove wheel and brake pads check disc spins without catching, most likely stiff piston not retracting enough you can check by levering pistons back while pads out ,while wheels off remove and discard mudshield

Thanks for the suggestions, i did have the anti rattle springs on, good suggestion about the stiff piston though, i will assemble again tomorrow and thanks for the ideas.

I have brought a new lower pin and it is much tighter than the old one, in fact i can not get the bearing on it at the moment! so i might as well put it on also.
