front wheel bearing and strut rubber replacement

Hello to you all hope you are all well.

could someone please help me my freelander1 needs a new (1) front wheel bearing and also a strut rubber mount what price is this likely to cost. Thanks
 
Not sure what you mean by strut rubber mount? There is a top bearing which is about £20 and the bearing is about £15.
Allow yourself a couple of hours to change them both.
 
Don't forget to put in the correct bearing, depending on year, and if it has the magnetic 'in bearing' type ABS it needs to go in the right way around or your ABS won't work! Otherwise you shouldn't have any problems.
 
thanks Andy the rubber mount has been replaced and that has stopped the squeaking noise that was coming from the glove compartment, The nearside wheel bearing has been replaced and i have fitted 4 new tyres as the back one's were going out of shape and the front ones were wearing fast this has made the landy smoother on the road but it has not stopped the droning noise that the garage thought replacing the wheel bearing would do as the sound seemed to be coming from that wheel! Iam not wanting to spend on the other side if thats not going to solve the noise as I have spent quite a bit on the car up to now. The garage says because its a auto they can't spin the wheels to see if there is any noise coming from the bearing! so I am at bit of a loss to know what to do as funds are tight and it runs really well but for the droning noise and it has got its mot Monday next. Any advice would be great thanks.
 
Not sure why being an auto means you can't run it up on a 2 post ramp!?!?

If it is coming from the front wheel then only other things it could be is driveshafts, check for paly on joints or output bearing on gearbox, again check shaft in gearbox for play.

Could it be the vcu propshaft bearings?? They are in the centre of the car but more likely to fail.
 
Thankyou andy it was the garage mech who said he couldn't spin the wheels because it was auto? will ask them to check on what you suggested hope it can be solved cheaply as possible as the car has 146.000 miles on clock but the engine was replaced at 56k for some reason so the engine has lots of life left. Bye the way great job you have done with your freelander.

He's not a mechanic then, he's probably a fitter. If all the wheels are off the ground, like on a 2 poster lift, then the wheels will spin (parking brake off), but they will spin together, as the AWD system will link them.

ok Freelander went for test and sailed through it good news but I am still struggling with the noise that's coming from the front and the garage thinks its now could be coming from the gearbox but they are not sure I have fitted 4 new tyres which has stopped the road noise but the noise seems to be worse when slowing down! the garage man is going to ring a land rover mech he knows to see if he can shed any light on it but to be honest I am sick of it things should be easier to solve than this but I am no mechanic.
 
Noises can be difficult to trace, at least without expensive sensors fitted in key locations to identify various noises.

All you have is your ears, to point you in the rough direction of the noise.

There are many items that can make noise, but the common sources are the VCU bearing, which being central, make the sound appear to come from everywhere. The VCU bearings is where I'd be checking first though.
 
thanks for your input Nodge will looking to that, But if that was the case would it sound noisier the faster you went because this sounds more when you slow down ie at a junction.

Ok. So the VCU bearings will make noise all the time the vehicle is moving, so that kinda eliminates those.:(

When you say it happens when slowing down. How are you slowing down? Are you using the gears, of just lifting off the throttle and applying the brakes?
 
when slowing down I just de-throttle and brake because its auto box, not saying the noise is not there at higher speeds but it just seems louder when slowing down and you are more aware. turn the radio up and you can hardly hear it but that's not the answer. Thanks again Nodge.
 
My TD4 SE auto used to make a quiet but still noticeable whine when off the throttle. I put it down to a bit of slack in the IRD, but I ignored it, as it was hardly audible.

Out of interest, has it got 4 identical tyres fitted, with the least worn on the rear?
 
My next thing to check is the IRD oil.
I'd drain it out, and see what it looks like.
It could well have metallic particulates in it, which means it needs reconditioning. I'm assuming the VCU has been checked for correct function?
 
Ok took it to a garage that does mainly land rovers and asked the mech to take it for a run and see if he could pinpoint what the noise was he drove it around 10 yards and reversed back and jumped out and said prop shaft bearings
he said he thought it was one and not both of them and was very confidant that it was the problem so that's my next job.
 
well gentlemen i just hope he is right coz she's to good to part with and the thought of looking at a Duster although they are vastly improved is something i didn't fancy at the moment.
