Hi

I am currently out in Spain and the front propshaft has gone. I've had one sent over from the UK from Simmonites it's the correct prop for the model but it would appear that the people that did the modifications ie 3 inch lift, tyres 37 x 13.50 on 18 inch rims, have put a larger flange on the centre which means the standard prop will not fit. The front propshaft that I have taken off was stamped GKN but no other details. Can anyone advise is it an easy enough job to change the flange to a standard one? I don't really want to have to drive back from Spain on just the rear prop.

Many thanks

Can you post a picture of the one that you have taken off? And maybe the new one too??

It sounds to me as if the larger flange is to connect to a double cardon prop shaft because of the 3 inch lift. Just a guess at the moment but pictures will help a lot and we can advise from there.

Pictures of props - not sure if i've posted them correctly

It just looks like the UJ has gone. can you not just replace the UJ? or is the actual flange damaged?

edit: i looked harder and can now see it. oops!

I wouldnt recommend driving with the diff lock in all the way back from Spain.

Well you need a transfer box output flange of diff flange dependant on which one has the larger flange on it. All this said you will destroy the new propshaft because of your lift! So If i were you I'd go order another double decardon propshaft again.

Its a shame it has cracked because by some mirical mabe just mabe you could have rebuilt your new one with the old flange but thats not going to work as its broken to pieces. I'd get another one ordered or drive home in 2wd probably the latter TBH

I'm pretty sure a td5 propshaft will do as the axle position and gearbox position didn't change to my knowledge so the front should be the same unless you have an auto or v8 or some kind of conversion

Getting a bit beyond me as to the what gearbox engine transferbox combination the landy has - I'm only a brickie! It has the original on as far as I am aware. I do know that the front is the same as I had the front fitted before I realised that the centre diff end was the wrong size! I thought it was all going too smoothly!!

Cheers just been looking at the old prop and it's stamped GKN. The lift etc on the landy was done by J E Engineering in Coventry and I've just googled GKN they are based in Birmingham so I've emailed J E Engineering to try and find out some info about the prop they put on. Hopefully they will reply tomorrow.

No double cardon joint fitted to TD5 90s from factory as far as I know. These are on the Discovery 2.

That prop and flange on the transfer box have been fitted to over come vibrations due to the lift. To be honest the double cardon joint looks replaceable to me.

Either way I would only refit a double cardon jointed front prop.

Hi AndyB66 I've emailed JKS Landrover spares and explained the problem I sent them photo's and they have come back with this reply:
Hi Brian,

Yes it certainly looks like a Disco prop, part of the conversion is to change the output flange on the transfer gearbox, hence why the standard prop will not fit. You could fit a standard output flange so that you could fit the standard prop but it would not last very long with a 3" lift.

So yes, I am pretty sure the Disco2 prop is the one you need to bolt straight on.

Regards James

I have also looked at photo's off the web of a rebuilt Disco 11 front prop and it looks 100% the same as my damaged one. What are your thoughts?

Cheers Brian
