Front Propshaft centre bearing query

Hi there,

I've had my late 1999 TD5 since just before Christmas, and have been slowly working out the niggles when I have time on the weekend.

So this weekend i've been redoing the UJs on the front and back Props as a matter of course (things looked like they hadn't seen a drop of grease in a fair while), and while the back wasn't bad, the front was a nightmare as the two ungreasable ones were almost seized in. Anyway, as ever, the part I hadn't gotten -the centre bearing in the middle of the cardon joint -was knackered! loads of muck had gotten in via the rubber sleeve (which is perished and cracked) that sits at the rear end of the front propshaft.

So my question is, can you get a new rubber sleeve to replace it, or any kind of resin to fix it? Thanks in advance.

Propshaft gaiter - I'm guessing that's the thing you're after?

Unfortunately not, basically on the front propshaft you have that gaiter to the front sliding part of the prop, and to the rear of of the propshaft joining the double cardan joint there is (which is not visible until you remove the UJs) a rubber walled cup that the centre bearing goes into once everything is connected.

I went the easy way with mine; bought a new prop shaft complete, with extra grease nipples on the double cardon u/js.

Precision 917 is the Centering Bearing, but it isn't always easy to get the outer housing out of the yoke.

Yah, if you go further down in the disco2 page, he mentions he changed the centre bearing.

I did the same, and as he says, it comes with a new rubber dust sleeve.

Probably worth changing it while you've got everything apart anyway.

The rubber sleeve is not part of the Precision bearing, that is something that LR fit.

Well got the centre bearing in the post today, just in a quandary still with the rubber sleeve it'll go into. It's not exactly hanging off, just not in the best shape with a nice tear going half way around.

Anybody got a good recommendation for some kind of glue/poxy resin that will do the trick of keeping the dirt out at least?

Superglue was originally developed for sticking rubber. Just make sure that everything is free of dirt and grease.
