When the front prop is off my Disco there is a tiny bit of play in the splines.

Would this cause a vibration through the floor of the car whilst accelerating?

Does this mean that the prop is bolloxed?

Answers on a post card please.....any help is appreciated!

Getting p****d off now with this vibration lark!

Yoke allignment??

Theres only a bit. feels like UJ play (but it isnt as they have just been replaced and in checked them since)

Mine did this after I took the rear prop off to strip the handbrake drum. I put it back on without marking the position it came from. Got awful vibration so undid the handbrake end and turned it 180 degrees. Absolutely fine then :)

I see...ive recentlt put a transfer box in it (twice) but thats a different story. Might rotate props tomorrow.

Would this be the same with the front prop or is it worse on the rear prop with it been longer??

rear props run with both inner yokes in the same plane ,front are out by a couple of splines sometimes vibration can be cured by starting with both yokes in alignment and advancing a spline at a time till okay ,its not uncommon for yokes to be out of alignment as mechanics often split them rather than undoing both ends new ones often come wrong and prop alignment seems to be something some dont learn now ,i was in a well known landy indy the other day and no one in the workshop new it made a difference and they were looking for a vibration on a vehicle they were restoring

I have an oscillating vibration on the rear end. It is more prevalent in fith but I have put that down to it being under more load/torque.

I have never split the prop but it may have been done before I got it.

i had quite a bad vibration from my front prop, started out with a small amount of play but just self destructed. would vibrate quite badly at 30 (when it was most noticeable) a small amount of play in the spilnes can become a lot in a short space of time

I took the front prop off today and got it on the bench.

The yokes were at 45degrees to oneand other so i marked it up and split the shaft to have a close look at the splines.

There was a small amount of wear on the splines.

There was a key way on the splines and the reciever, so the shaft would only fit back together in the same place.

So I couldnt alter the yoke orientation.

I then spoke to somebody at a prop shaft centre local to me, and asked them about yoke allignment.

They said that there are 3 types of shaft.

Key way type 1 - Yokes @ 90 degrees
Key way type 2 (mine) - Yokes@ 45 degrees
No key way type - Yoke allignment can be altered

I ran the landy down the road in diff lock with the shaft removed and there was no vibration.

My friend had a "spare" front propshaft, so I fitted that as a comparison....
What a difference!!

So it was definately my prop that was bad, I dont know if it was out of balance or the small amount of visable wear was causing the prop to "drum"

Long story short....different prop and the problem is solved!!
