Hi Folks

I own a 1995 Discovery 300Tdi and am apparently in need of a new front n/s wheel bearing. I was wondering how difficult a job it is to replace one. Is it something I need a mechanic to sort, or is it one of those simple sort of jobs anyone could undertake with confidence. If it entails removing half shafts or is difficult because of the fact it is a 4x4 then I will leave it to a mechanic, but if not then I would have a go myself.

I would be grateful of a bit of guidance.

Hi Toad
I've done both 200 and 300 TDi Front Wheel bearings. To be honest its pretty easy, and I'm on a steep learning curve ! (Started with bulb changes and a week later head replacement...never done one before, but it worked !)

You may require one or two large sockets or a large shifting spanner. Since you are going that far down, as it where, you may as well do the Discs and Pads whilst you are at it.

Got anyone local who has done it before, you can ask for help...just in case things go wrong.

Thanks for the rapid reply. I have got someone who I can call on in times of difficulty, but I don't like asking too often. I only had the brakes replaced recently and am somewhat suprised that this bearing wasn't spotted then.

Anyway I think you've answered my question. I just didn't want to get bogged down in any major mechanical work. I walk with a stick so its difficult enough getting down that far without finding myself out of my depth in other ways.

When you say you had the brakes replaced do you mean the pads or discs, if it was the discs then there is a chance that they were not done up well enough so apear to be loose.
