I've not used the car for a week, and tonight I unlocked it fine using the blipper, drove to the souper market and locked it again. All good, no problems.

Came out, unlocked it with the fob, all seemed good, put the shopping in the back and tried to get in. Noticed that the poppy uppy thing was still down, but all the rest were up fine, and I could open all the other doors. tried to open the drivers door using the key, but still nothing. After getting in through the back doors, i was able to open the drivers door by pulling twice in the internal handle.

So, the drivers door won't open using either the blipper, key or the internal door switch and the only way it opens is by using the internal handle, but only on the second pull.

Can someone please let me know if this is a mechanical issue or an electrical one.

Ta muchly :)

The disco 2 door latches are notorious for this kind of failure. Sadly the only successful way of fixing the trouble is to replace the door latch completely.
Some members have in the past reckoned that they've been able to open the latch and replace the faulty motor inside (there are two motors), but I have tried and believe me it isn't that easy to even open the latch unit and frankly not worth trying.
As I said the only way is to replace the latch. They ain't cheap at between 80 to 100 quid new depending on where you get one and about 50 quid for a second user one.
On the drivers door, be very careful about the little linkages, if you drop one as you're taking things apart, I can almost guarantee that you'll never find it again.
Replacement of the latch will mean stripping the door down almost completely. I've done it so often on mine that I've got the time down to about two hours now.
This bloke has done a good write-up on changing the rear door latch, the front ones are similar but the driver's door does have some extra linkages to take care of.

Thanks, just been reading some other freds about similar issues and was hoping to find an easy cheap solution, but to no avail. :(
I'll take the door card off tomorrow and have a nose around to see if it's anything obvious before I part with any folding.

Just been watching a couple of oootoob videos about replacing the latch and it looks like a faff, so as I don't have the new one yet, would it cause any problems with the central locking system if I just disconnect the electrical connector to the existing suspect latch, or is the drivers door latch some sort of 'brain' for the rest of the system?

Edit: Learn by doing ;) Disconnected the faulty door latch on the drivers door and all the other doors still works fine. Just need to order the new one now.

One point to note, from my own experience. When you refit the window frame, make sure that you check the seal at the top of the frame and the rubber around the door opening. When I did mine and then took the Disco to get it washed I ended up with a bit of a shower finding its way in through the seal between the door and the door frame rubber.

I need to correct a statement I made at the start of this fred. When I said that ALL the other doors still worked, that was incorrect. It was only this morning that I noticed that the rear door also has exactly the same issue as the drivers door.
So, before I start replacing latches, is this indicative of an issue elsewhere, or have I just been really unlucky to have the drivers door and rear door latches fail at exactly the same time?

As long as all the other doors are working you might have been unlucky cos the driver's door is on it's own separate circuit and all the others in parallel on other....if you see or hear any activity in the door when you operate the fob the latch is the first suspect

Sadly you would appear to have been unlucky this time, not unlike my own trials with the door latches.
The rear n/s went first so I ordered a new one and fitted it and then it wouldn't shut without giving it a good slam. tried to re-align the door striker plate but there's little or no adjustment there. The latch turned out to be faulty. Got another one and that just dropped straight in, no problems. Then a week later the driver's door latch went, but at least by then I had a pretty good idea about what I was doing!

Meant to add this before, but had forgotten about it until just now.
If the door latch isn't working, and you decide to disconnect its electrical plug like I did, bear in mind that the buzzer won't go off to remind you that you've left your lights on.

Yep, that's because the switch that triggers the courtesy light and the other circuits hanging on it like the alarm system(s) is in the latch, not a button in the doorframe as with many other vehicles.

Yeah, I thought it was the plunger type and left my lights on one day. Fortunately, it wasn't for long, so didn't cause an issue.
The problem is that I put my main lights on when I'm driving to work over the mountain section of the TT course in the daylight, so sometimes it's not so obvious to realise they're on. :)

Does it not have an alarm to warn you that the lights are on?

Cheers
