Hi All

I've got a front diff that makes a terrible whine when driving but seems to drive ok otherwise, it also has a slight oil leak

Ive had it in a garage and they say there is excessive play in the diff and have quoted around £300 in labour to replace it.

So a couple of questions if anyone can help

Does anyone know of anywhere I can get a decent 2nd hand front diff?
Is £300 reasonable for labour?
Should I be doing it myself instead? I know my way around a petrol engine but that's about it... also I don't really have anywhere to jack it up as I have a sloped driveway

Cheers

£300 in labour seems extortionate to me.
Was it a normal garage or LR specialist garage?
If the former maybe they are thinking you need to strip it all down, hubs, stubs etc etc.. which is time consuming.
But the way I do it is to unbolt the swivel from the axle casing (7 bolts) Pull the whole assembly out just enough to get the shafts out the the diff, unbolt prop, unbolt diff, pull out, new one in with gasket or rtv, push whole hub assembly back into diff and bolt back up, fill with oil. Job done.
Shouldn't take more than a couple of hours even if you haven't done it before.

I thought it was, its an LR specialist, don't suppose you know of any others around yorkshire that may be more reasonable?

Unfortunately not bud. I do all my own work so have never used a garage.
It's not a difficult job to do yourself if you wanted to give it a try.

If yours is 24 spline then yes, D2 diffs are the same as D1 diffs.
What year is yours?
Ah, fair enough. It really is an easy job. I love working on mine, and the bonus is it saves a shed load of money.

Mines a 1996 P reg, ive rung a few breakers with D2 diffs for sale and they all seem to say it wont fit, land rover ownership is so confusing!

I can imagine it saves you a fortune! Naturally if you're ever bored and have no car to work on your more than welcome to fix mine instead :)

Yours should be 24 spline then yes.
D2 diffs are the same as D1 (I.E standard 2 pin 24 spline do-dah's) but the rest of the axle is different.
If you're going to own an LR it is always good to learn, even if it is just the basics.
I've got plenty on at the mo :D

Aren't D2 shafts thicker than D1,
Cos if they are then D2 diff is no good for you
no, ignore that lol, front diff is the same

Might sound silly, but have got the correct oil and amount in the diff?.

Don't know if you've noticed, but you've got two wheels missing, and a few other bits! :)

Not missing, just in a big pile in the back yard :D

Shafts are a different design, but the spline'd end is the same, so the diffs will also fit in earlier axles.

He will soon have it back together,a weekends work should sort it.:p:D:D

You know me too well :p:D
Although in all seriousness I'm not just a bum sat at home (tinkering with LR's) all day anymore and have now got a job, so time is pretty scarce, probably take a darn sight longer than the last one did.
