Front brake calliper guide pins

Hi all,

I'm changing my front pads and discs this weekend, got the parts ready to go. But the LR dealer reckons that in the LR parts system it says to also renew the guide pins at the same time as you renew the pads. There's a kit available from LR to do it.

I've never done that on any other type of car before, so the question is whether I really need to on the Freelander. Is there an issue that anyone knows about please ?

Had to renew mine as i bent them....

Old ones you can pull out and clean should you want to or replace.

If they seem badly corroded change them but otherwise should be fine i would say

depends on how much they are..... if they're only a few quid, it would make sense to change them too. If they are more expensive, need to make a judgement call as to whether they are salvagable.

Thanks for the info. I think they were about £13 + vat for the kit. I'm not sure if that just does one side though and therefore i'd need 2 kits. Will give them a call this morning and find out.

Did my discs and pads (not pins) last weekend - couldn't be easier. The pins that the caliper moves on were siezed on one side so gave them all a good clean and re greased. Used a big can of the brake cleaner spray to get rid of the crud that had built up.

I clean guide pins with brake clean and scotch brite as a matter of course when renewing pads on calipers of this nature.

Snap.... I did mine also and just cleaned them up from the crud. What I am NOT looking forwards to is the rear shoes! Those springs can be a bugger to put back!

Thanks all, very helpfull. I got it all apart yesterday and the guide pins were fine. Just mae sure that they were nicely greased and put it all back together.
