Hey guys am currently about to really get into overhauling my land rover series 2a ex-MoD 109.

First thing Im going to do is to the front axle.
Im planning on a Cost effective overhaul at the moment so whats your guys opinions on what I ought check and how far to go with the axle?

Ought I really remove the leather gaitors and swivels to inspect the swivels and UJ's?

Pinion seal / bearing?
Diff crown play etc?

Sorry for the questions guys

Appreciate any and all of your help

Regards

M

Your diff is probably ok, do you have free wheeling hubs fitted?

Test diff by chocking wheels and putting transfer box in neutral (out of 4wd) and you shouldn't be able to turn the front prop by much more than 1/4 turn.

Check swivel balls, they may be pitted, expensive to replace. If you're wanting a good drive it's worth jacking up both front wheels and popping the steering arm off and checking how stiff or loose your swivel pins and steering relay are....mines like driving a new car after fixing the steering relay...

Also probably worth taking off the stub axles and checking the ujs if they've had any sort of work they may have gone - easy and cheap job to replace.
