Hi all, I currently own a TD5 series 2 discovery and my missus's hot hatch. Trouble is we are always fighting over the disco so have decided to purchase a 2nd 4x4. we have seen and virtually shook on a deal for a 54 plated TD4 freelander SE(facelift), it looks nice, lowmiles, FSH etc but are they any good? do they have alot of problems?running cost? i used to own a 1.8 XEi freelander years back and had the usual headgasket problems and said never again!!! it will be mainly used as a car, taking the mrs/kids/dogs up the farm to the horses, but the reason we fight is for towing,i transport a lot of motors around and she takes the horse box-so are they any good at towing?
any info would be gratefully received

Carefully check the weight of the horsebox and horse.

The Freelander can tow a max of 2 Metric Tonnes (braked trailer) - combined with the vehicle weight of 1.5 tonnes gives a total max Gross Train Weight of 3.5 tonnes.

A Disco can tow 3.5 tonnes (braked trailer) and strictly speaking if the Gross Train Weight exceeds 3.5 tonnes then the driver should have one of the new Digital Personal Tacho units.

We used to tow 2 horses with the Disco (TD5 Auto) and I have seen people tow boxes with other SUV vehicles the size of the Freelander.
It was quite alarming when I saw a horse kick off in the back and rock the vehicle up and down - It was stationery, but I wouldn't want that happening on the move with the lighter weight of the Freelander.

Another point is that, whilst the Freelander can tow up to 2 tonnes, it is recommended that an additional cooler be fitted to the AutoBox

cool, i have already said if we get it she can't take more than one horse, it's mainly my little girls pony she takes, if she takes 2 she will have the disco. i wouldlike 2 discos but they are too big for every day use and the freelander seems the obvious choice, don't fancy hondas or ravs etc
