What do you mean by only drive 2 inches?
Does the car move then stop but the revs can go high?
Do you get any accompanying grinding noises or jolts of movement?
Is it manual or auto?
Is it still 4WD? If the answer is yes - are you sure its 4WD - does it have props running front to back and has the IRD been frigged to 2WD (you can't tell by looking at it) - if you jack just 1 rear wheel up can you turn it quite easily (2WD) or not (4WD or binding brakes) ? Suppose that test might not work if the internals of the IRD have been trashed.
If its 2WD I presume the front diff component of the IRD is knackered probably by the previous drive shaft - you'll need a recon IRD.
If its 4WD I presume the splines have sheared on IRD (hopefully not gearbox) - as Nodge says, replace IRD and almost certainly the VCU.

What ever, 1 (or more I suppose) of the clutch, gearbox or IRD are fubared - as it went with a drive shaft incident - the IRD must be the prime suspect.

It 4 wheel drive and it will bearly move the get a horrible knocking and grinding noise and u can see the drive moving but not turning and I just discovered where spline goes in there is play so may recondition the ird
