Got an 06 freelander wanted cheap set of second hand 16inch alloys to put winter tyres on can anyone tell me if wheels from an earlier model would fit as I've seen a couple sets on eBay but heard that earlier ones don't fit

thats correct m8.
land rover changed the brake drums & calipers on the freelander 3 times, i have a 51 plate td4 & i had to put spacers bought from halfrauds on mine to get my alloys to fit..

again your facelift hippo's calipers & drums are different from mine so i'd check by either trying 1 at a car breakers or a friend who has a pre facelift model first although someone on here has prob done this & will be along to give you a concrete answer on it..

I was lucky two weeks ago, I saw an add on the Flemish Freelander owners club site for 5 rims Freedom 16" having the same specs as mine so I bought them. New they would cost, for 5, vat incl. 1.435£, I bought them for 220£ (for all five). Of course I only need 4 but hey, it was a package. I had my wintertyres mounted on them on tuesday, so now I can change whenever necessary, no need to decide (sometimes) months in advance to change.

lol,We've all been stung by those fraudsters at one time or another! ;)

:)yep although the spacers were a good price & they do 3/5/8mm universal ones that saved me having to get new wheels after a complete brake change of disks/pads that altered the thickness/diameter of my set up so the alloys i had on it would'nt fit....

long story but thanks to spacers i saved a packet..:)

I thought spacers put additional load on wheel bearings and therefore shortened their life??

Have a look at a look at this thread I started from last yr asking the same question.

ive got an 04 sport with 235/50/18 wheels,i just purchased 15 inch steel wheels of ebay and fitted 195/80/15 tyres to keep the speedo reading the same and insa turbo dakar tyres to keep cost down.steel wheels fit all models exept fl2:)

Anything off a V6 or TD4 should fit ok as they got the larger brakes - forget about pre-2000 though as they will foul the brake drums & calipers. I bought a set of 16" alloys for my 2002 TD4. The seller swore that they came off a 2004 until I pointed out the part number says they came off a 1999 model. I could have used 5mm spacers and got around it that way but didn't like the idea and decided to return them for a refund.

Check the part numbers before you part with your cash - I learned the hard way.
