I have a year 2000 freelander 2000 cc TD L series engine I need to replace the water pump anybody help with brief instructions etc

The reason i am looking to change the water pump, I have recently had a replacement head fitted (New Head) the car starts runs fine, but the temp gauge does not register at all. once on the road after about 3 miles the water pipes begin to presurise to the point where it ripped oil cooler water hose in bits, I have replaced the temp sensor and the hose but the same problem exists, the thermostat has been removed and I see very little movement in the water if it was not for the temp gauge not working i would go strait for the water pump, Before I change the water pump I will change the header tank top and would like to solve the temp gauge problem, at the point where the two wires for the temp sensor leave the plastic conduit a green wire exits via a spade conector this is not connected to anywhere and when I put it to earth the temp gauge goes to max ???? maybe this cable has been damaged or lost in the head change, any Ideas would be greatfully recieved.
