My 2003 Freelander TD4 wont start anymore - if i remove the air inlet and use a bit of startspray the engine will come on and work fine until i switch it off.

As soon as the engine runs the car is driving like it always did and i have no loss of power or other difficulties except the starting issue.

Now i have been to the LR Dealer and they told me that the primary high pressure pump is broken as it only reaches 50 bar pressure - now in the manual of the td4 it says that the system need 200 bar for starting and 300 bar for the system to run smooth in idle - if the primary high pressure pump is broken and only achieves 50 bar (300 are needed for smooth idle) then why can the system work fine in idle and in running mode?!

Also how difficult is it to replace the Primary High Pressure Pump as it is driven by the chain of the engine?!

Sorry for bothering you but i dont know where else to go and unfortunately i have had some issues with the mentioned LR Dealer regarding the replacement of other parts in the past. (new injectors and wiring loom for over 600 pounds and all that was needed to do was to clean the EGR Valve)

Thanks a lot!!!

99% sure will be an injector, if you take off the return pipes from the injectors then clamp the return pipe, turn on the ignition and you should get no fuel coming out of the injector for 8 to 10 secs if it does before then that will be the prob

i will check on the injectors but i am 99.9% sure that they are not the cause because they have been switched for new ones about a year ago but i will check.

one thing i dont understand is that the dealer said that he would only get a pressure reading of the high power pumper of 50 Bar but for the start it needs 200 and for the running process in idle it needs a minimum of 300. if it runs fine in idle and has no problems with road use then it would need more than the 300 which it gets because otherwise the engine wouldnt run at all or am i misunderstanding something here?!

My problem is that it has to build up 200 bar for the start - since the engine doesnt start the info from the dealer with a max. output of only 50 bar would explain that but since the engine runs (and it runs like it did before without no problems after you helped a bit to start it - startspray) it has to get a pressure of 300 and more according to the LR Rave Handbook so why do they only get a reading of 50 bar - that cant be and thats where i started thinking about the problem - if it runs fine once its started then it has to get the right amount of pressure so the pump should be fine...... thats the way i am thinking....

let me know if you share or dont share my interpretation and let me know solutions ;)

thanks

fred...do a search for 'glo plugs' might find an ansur there:) ....

I still work in psi when running the high pressure pump runs at 28000psi but when cranking only 6000psi if an injector is leeking will not fire. From your previous post if landrover main dealer changed your injectors the charge £300 per injector and around 4 hours for the job another £200 ish so they may have only changed the faulty ones. Did they use the tech 5 diagnostic? as its not the best. I still think you will find its an injector problem. Fairly easy to do your self £125 an injector
